The Dino badge was in respect to Enzo's son Dino. Mr. Ferrari wanted all cars with out a V12 to carry the Dino badging, hence the 206,246, and the GT4. How ever this did change with the 308. Before Dino Ferraris death he had been working on a V6 motor.
I had an '82 GTSi and it wasn't that bad of a car. Just throw on the electromotive ignition system, a Tubi, and do the routine maintenance and you've got a peppy, reliable, classicly cool ride . The carbed and QV 308's are better performers, but the 2-valvers are not as bad as their reputation.
You are absolutely right! I've added Hyper-Flow catalytic converter, which is everything the advertisements say it is. I love my 308 - gorgeous lines, great handling, even great power for the price and era. So, yeah, the carb cars have a bit more power, but their cost is almost double the 2v cars, and they're not as reliable. The injected 308s remain a great value, a beautiful car, and fun and reliable. I love mine! .
That's a pretty extreme statement; besides, you'd only get a few grand per toe on the used phalanges market. Also, a branch lopper would be more effective than garden shears for removing pinky toes. Eek!
you'd probably like to drive a Mondial t with Valeo transaxle. Then at least you have one less pedal to press with the bandages on. lol
The 348 engines are rock. no question. They didn't feature the exhaust problems of the later 355's. The only things in the T vs 348's that I found somewhat similar were the Fuse boxes and the sensors. There is a slight variation in Motronics, which I believe the 348's didn't care about, but don't know. The T's had a trunk on a run that would get so hot, that keeping, say chocolate in there would be melted to liquid. Cooling is fine, if you take care of it, the A/C, IF you keep it stock works just fine. Steering seems to get worn over time and needs some parts, as the suspension motors will wear if you do, even in automatic mode, heavy driving requiring the motors to work a lot...I leave them in auto, unless doing cornering/mountain work then I set to hard. The windows like the 348's can be slow to move upwards, but, I never use them...they are always down as is the top, which can be somewhat frustrating when needed in a hurry [ask me about a sudden downpour :| ... glad I brought a towel that day]. THE BLASTED seat runners/'hamsters/mice' are nonsense. work, then not, then ??? just don't use them 348s/Mondial-T's had a common starting problem after a 'hot' run where the engine wouldn't even turn over after parking for even a couple min....QUITE embarrassing. One usually had to sit there for as much as 10min OR longer .. I always pretended I was talking on the cell phone BUT put in a booster between the key and starter and bingo: never a problem again. Other than that, I can think of nothing else. except like the TS, The T's/Mondials in general might spring a leak under rain on the top....but I've only driven in the rain once and that was one of four times I've ever had the top up driving. I only wish that T's had a better access panel in the rear seat area to get at some parts and not having to drop the engine every time I want to accomplish some items.
Seems that that hot run starting problem was sorted nicely by you. I bet the fuse box and sensor gremlins seem to pop up at very inconvenient times.
My least favorite Ferraris, in order are the 348, 400i and the Mondail 8. I would then say that the 308 GT4 was up there in ugliness. I recently bought an early 308GTS that is a garage queen due to the costs I am having with fixing it. That's what I get for buying a sub $20k 308. (Bought on August 20th for my bday....BIG mistake!)
Been driving my 75 308 gt4 for over 25 years and I have put 116,000 miles on it. Never, ever, has anybody came up to me and said it was ugly. I think only Ferrari owners feel this way. I get alot of wow's, cool car, what is it, how old is it, nice Pantera, but never, that car is ugly. Dave
I remember when I was first thinking about getting a Mondial. I assumed I would have to deal with people thinking "it's not a real Ferrari". Now that I own her, nothing could be further from the truth. To the contrary, I find that my car enthusiast friends and strangers on the street alike are completely enamored with her. In fact, there is absolutely nothing I would change about her..I love every square inch! For me, it is the perfect Ferrari. The only people who think a particular Ferrari is the "worst Ferrari" are owners who favor one model over another, or non-owners, who quite frankly should refrain from opinion unless they have had personal experience with one. In any event, I think we can all agree that, unlike almost all other cars, which serve a primary purpose of providing basic transportation, Ferrari makes no pretense about being anything other than an object of passion.- I can think of no other car that is more subjective. This debate is the functional equivalent of debating how many fairies can fit on the tip of a pin.
robbie you are correct...the actual debate I believe was over a pin head...but isn't pin tip, that much smaller BTW, you have great taste in Ferraris
Dersono, IMHO, in the flesh the Mondial is just jaw dropping beautiful. Pictures do it such a disservice. If my experience is any measure, people just adore it. Of course, most people assume mine is a lamborghini for whatever reason...maybe its because she is black and not red. In fact, come to think of it, my entire neighborhood thought is was a lamborghini--what an insult
for me you are right !!! 308 injection 2 valves good looking but no performances...... but the less performant car was the 208....sold only here in Italy.... 208 first series only 155 HP !!! and 208 second series TURBO not intercooler, only 220 HP but only more than 4000 rpm to move at the traffic light. TILL you do not drive these cars, please, do not speak of the Ferrari less Ferrari of any time. or worst F. cars !!!! All the other Ferraris maybe are expensive to mantain, but are all in the positive part of the hystory!!! ciao alex
and no one has mentioned the Tractors they must be very good!......http://www.ferrari-tractors.com/70'S.htm
Please guys, keep right on saying that!!!! (and keep the prices depressed.) Then, I can buy ANOTHER one (as I'll NEVER be able to afford the models of cars the majority of posters here can).
...and here's some pictures of two of the ugliest (both mine - #049773 and #10704 in exactly the same location)! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Those two Ferrari (412 and 308 GT4) are neither ugly nor bad cars for the time when they were new. I don't like the color, they are not "rosso corsa" , and that means 50% less Ferrari....
O/T: I love that part of the world! Last time, we stayed at the quaint and well-attended Hampton Inn just a few blocks from there (one block from the South St Seaport). After driving the rental Lincoln (it's all they had left) throughout Manhattan you're a brave man indeed. I must admit, that 400 looks at home in the Big City
Take heart. The truth is very few posters on here even own a Ferrari, and of those most of us are scraping by to own the lower end stuff. So be happy with what you have, your still in a VERY elite group of people on this earth who can say they own a Ferrari. Think about it. Many owners here own more than one Ferrari, even if its as in my case two old beater 308's. There is that Guy in Texas and his 3 cars, that Mechanic in Colorado and his 3 or 4, that Fusebox guy out east and his 2 cars, that crazy machinest guy in SoCal with his 3 or 4, and lets not forget that fine gentleman out east with two or three "early" Ferrari's plus his "Targa Florio" car.... Out of roughly 130K total cars built in a 60 year span (less during Enzo's life, the "true" Ferrari's), and an unknown number missing and/or destroyed (perhaps 10-20% production wide, maybe more), and considering people owning two or more, I would bet there are not very many owners in the world. Off the top of my head I can think of over a half dozen individual collections that contain a dozen or more examples by single individuals, and I know there are many more collections, and that some collections contain MANY examples of the marque. And those are just the collections we know about.
