They all have the same engine, they just get to build it themselves, and most use the same transmission now don't they? NASCAR teams have more engine design latitude than F1 these days.
I bet they don't even use the same chemical formula for the PAINTWORK. If I know McLaren, they have 26 patents on just how to put air in the tires.
No. There is a maximum bore spacing rule to limit the over-squareness of the bore-stroke ratio, and a common ECU. But other than this, there are probably no interchangible (stressed) parts in use. The pneumatic valve systems are all differnt (and sort of all the same, too), the cam and cam gears are all different, headrs are different from race to race. No, you see, the word constructor is taken to the extreme in F1. The constructors build the chassis, suspension, uprights, axles, and the more well respected teams also build their engines and transmissions; have large computer farms to do the strutural and aerodynamic simulations, have big simulation shops where entire cars are run through races while sitting on measurement equiptment; and even their own wind tunnels.
There is some real merit to the NASCAR comment. Clearly the engines are not interchangable, but they are all down to severe specs... there is almost no freedom of design in the engine or chassis any more. While the teams are required to "build" their own cars, most shop out some of the CFD design, and materials testing ... and even the autoclave work. Its the rules that are so limiting. back in the beginning of the sport you could go and buy any F-1 car from who ever would sell you one... show up and go racing... even though that seems extreemly far fetched today, i think the rules should alow you to go adn buy a chassis and engine etc.. and go racing. The rules are so insane and limiting - it makes the "Show" much less in my opinion.
Please review the engine regulations. There are more substantive specified dimensions and specifications than you would admit Brawn was able to swap in the MB unit for Honda's at the last minute and still win a championship, if proof is still needed.
I have to agree ... these engines are pretty damn close to spec engines. Really sad, really sad. Thanks Bernie and Max for fncking F1!! Pete
Yes but to imply that the Ferrari motor is the same as ther Mercedes motor is the same as the Renault motor is the same as the Cosworth motor is really going to far. What makes this formula so interesting IS the different engineering approaches. Just look at Brawn last year and see what fresh "outside the box" thinking can do. Look at Red Bull blowing away Ferrari with maybe half the budget. If the red cars just won every year, the sport would be nothing. The formula allows independent thinking so that radical ideas can still make winners out of also rans.
Really... so how to you explain Brawn coming out of nowhere last year winning the title? Magic fairy dust? You know, sometimes I really wonder why I even bother to answer your posts.
A) It wasn't " out of nowhere", 2) I already have: F1 uses a spec engine. Crank height, cg, length and width all dictated. Materials restricted, power normalized, revs limited. I don't get it either, it's not like you're shedding light...
Seriously... this is the last time I bother even wasting my time with you. You must be the most dislikable person to debate with that I know. Congratulations. It takes some effort to reach that level. I hope you enjoy it. It's just not fun anymore so you're history to me. Have fun... Enjoy the solitude. I have no idea why you like to take such a negative position to everything you post but someday, I hope you figure out what is making you just so .... awnry.
So, then, why does not one single large part from the Ferrari engine fit on the Mercedes engine or the Renault engine?
1) It was out of nowhere, Honda was dead last in '08, champions in '09. That is coming out of nowhere. Period. 2) Explain to me and everyone else why last year there was such a FOTA uprising? One of the main reasons was BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T WANT SPEC ENGINES! Please explain. Alex By the Way: 2 is not the next letter in the alphabet...
I bet the pistons fit, cause the bore will be the same because surely as they have specified the bore centres they are all at the absolute max. This means that the cranks will possibly fit as well ... Rod are all made by the same company I believe too ... So personally while I am sure they are different, they are now so close to a spec engine that it makes no difference. The reason they got so upset, Alexweav79, about actually making it a rule is because they don't want the image of F1 to be spec engines ... the fact that they 90% are is missed by most observers ... Heck we are even into power parity now ... Jean Todt really needs to free up these rules. I suggest relaxing the number of cylinders fixing first. Like to relax the rev restriction too ... Pete
it's funny how these spec engines...every year, there is always a discrepency in hp... renault got a break to change things last seasons (and is still down on power today), ferrari this year got a redo... one of the stupidest threads, started by one of the whiniest sourpuss'. same ol crap rehashed every half a season.
