Dealership answers: Thank you for calling so and so Porsche
Caller: I'd like to speak to my sales person about the Porsche I special ordered six months ago.
Sales guy: Hey, how's everything going?
Caller: Great. I'm really looking forward to my new Porsche being delivered. I can hardly wait.
Sales guy: Um, ah, I've got some bad news about that...

Sales Guy: I'll tell you what, it had a bumpy ride on the way over here, so we'll discount the final price by 2k if you sign this waiver.

Back in 1982, I was shopping for a new Porsche. At the time, I was driving a 1975 911S Targa.

The dealer (Oklahoma City, Jack Robbins) had a listing that came over about once a week about what cars were "on the boat", and you could kind of pick one out and put a marker on it.

They had a 911SC Targa in a very unusual color configuration that had been special ordered, and then the deposit declined, coming in to Houston. It was a sort of Champaign silver, with a very dark brown, almost black, full leather interior.

When it came in, I was in love with it... but, the managing sales guy and the head mechanic got this sick look on their faces when I spotted it in the make ready area. As old Kelly (the wrench) put it to my salesman - "did you tell James about this car yet?"

Turns out that the container had not been sealed up well, or had been broken open on the transport ship. The car had completely unnacceptable corrosion on all the lower body parts (including the mechanicals) and was written off as a total loss. Porsche sent a rep to check it out, and sure enough - the little prince went straight to the crusher. With the Porsche guy watching so nobody could pull a fast one.

I eventually intercepted a regular color Silver Platinum over Black Targa - but that other one was the one that got away.
