There's a lot of negativity out there about current series for various reasons, some legit and some not ;)

So I thought I'd ask the Fchat racing crew, what is your favorite era of racing, and why? Was it the cars, the drivers, the series, the tracks?

For me it was CART/IndyCar from 1989 or 1990 until 1999. amazing cars, engine wars, tire wars, all types of tracks (big ovals, short ovals, street and road), and a truly amazing driver lineup, including F1 champions, the best of the young American and Canadians, the Brazillian Invasion, etc.

didn't hurt that the cars were freakin' beautiful either!

I really enjoy watching races from the late 80's to mid 90's F1. I loved the cars then and also 2003-08, up until current regulations.

I enjoyed F1 and Prototype racing from about 1964 thru 1973, before commercialism and aerodynamics completely took over. The Indycars and Can Am cars of that era were fun as well. This was also the era of the best racing movies: Grand Prix, Winning and Le Mans.

To me the best single year for any racing series was Trans Am 1970, when six different Detroit brands fielded factory teams and the racing was close and exciting.

All of them. Since "spec" racing became the norm, racing is as boring as dry toast. Driver skills will never be determined because no new track records will be recorded nor will the ability to post top speeds determine who has the biggest "cacones" to venture into limits unknown. CanAm, TransAm, IMSA, CART, USAC, NASCAR, etc have all diminshed the value of their form of racing by providing such means of "parity". As the racing great Smokey Yunick once said..."racing isn't supposed to be fair".

60's F1. To me, it was still a bunch of guys racing and not so much a business then. It was glamorous.

The downside: It was amateurish in safety and had way too many fatal accidents.

Great answers from all above, imho. For me,

F1: '77 -'97 - prequalifying, turbos, and ok, a Villeneuve or two..;). Prettier cars in the 60s however.

Indy - 90s - CART, more exciting than F1 in many races, Unsers, Andrettis, Canadians, F1 guys, unique mix of ovals and road courses. How was this allowed to implode ?

CAN-AM - before my time but I love reading about the early days of the USRRC through to the B and D show.

    Lemans/WSC - again before my time - 60s. F1 drivers (current not ex), P4s, GT40s, Daytona Cobras, Chaparrals, 904s, 906s weird DB/Alpine/Matras......wonderful.

NASCAR - 60s early 70s. Cars resembled stock at least. Rough and tumble characters littered throughout. Cheaters, convicts, alcoholics, Superbirds, Talladegas..fun.

Wish I had been old enough to attend the early years of the ARRC/SCCA runoffs also...

I'm caught in a time warp...:(...
