Hello fellow "F"-Chatters, I've posted a thread on this topic long ago, but that I'd start a new one as to refresh it. I finally took possession (after several years of looking) of a period correct Blaupunket Model CR-2000 for my 79-308GTB. It took me a very long time to find and I paid a fair price as it's in excellent condition. My question was for those of you that own the 79-vintage 308GTB/GTS, what's your O.E. Stereo? Thank you much! Chris.
There was no such thing, all cars were delivered to the dealer with no radio as I understand it. I have a '79 but I am not sure of the Blaupunkt model. I will take a look tomorrow. Interesting question to see what people have.
Yes youre right, as I understand it, it was a dealer installed item! I bought mine on e-bay and tried to get as period correct as I could. That stated, Ive seen some variations. It be interesting to see what other F-chatters have. Myself, I just wanted to stuff the hole..lol Once a upon a time (before my ownership), mine did a fitted a stereo, and was removed. I hope that I bought the right one..l Thanks Guys, Chris.
Crappy pic I know but this is going to be about as period correct as I can imagine as to what a dealer was typically installing in 1979. This is the radio in Magnum's 79 308 during the first season (filmed mostly in 1980). Image Unavailable, Please Login
There was a well known article in the Apr 1980 C&D (at least well know around here) about the journey that car took across country to begin filming the pilot episode. The collection of cassettes brought on the trip was mentioned in the article so the radio was there when the car was picked up in New Jersey, presumably "new" - it was December 1979. So unless for some odd reason the production company decided to change the radio after it got to Hawaii (why on earth would they?) that particular Blaupunkt in the picture was installed by someone in 1979. I took that picture from an early episode in the first season. I froze the frame from the DVD. So there you go
My 79 GTB also had an Alpine radio. I removed it and had the radio panel piece recovered in new vinyl creating a blank.
-77 GTB delivered through Modern Motor Classics CA Blaupunkt Bamberg, believe it was top of line from Blaupunkt in 1976. Cool feature with record button and microphone. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello Harald, Thank you for sharing! Please don't take this as disparaging, but that looks as if is very generic..lol..I suspect that its a lot better than its aesthetics, especially in sharp contrast to whats available now .it's very interesting what the dealers put in these fine cars, isn't it? Thank you again!. Chris.
Did the car have a stereo/radio when leaved the factory? i was told that here in Italy it just had the antenna and speakers and you had to buy by yourself the radio/cassette player, but i never investigated that. ciao
On the contrary, I think it fits the switch gear and instrumentation you see in the rest of the cockpit very nicely indeed. It's a far better aesthetic match than later radio models in the 70s/80s.
1979 US GTS, Blaubunkt CR-2001 I love the look but it just did not perform well enough (you cannot hear it over the Tubi and other wonderful noises back there except at lights). I have heard there is someone who rebuilds them with new internal components and it is tempting. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you Richard! That's seems ot be a very popular model for our 79's! Mine is the CR-2000, which I'm now thinking might be the wrong one..sigh.. Thank you for the post and picture! Chris.
That Blaupunkt was the on that the VW dealer put in my Uncle Don's 1980 Scirocco when he bought it new. I have one here on the shelf that I bought for my 74 MGB. You can make these things sound just fine. I have the Cr-3001 in my 308 because it was very popular from the dealer back in 82-83. Tons of 308's had this particular unit. You can make them sound just fine. I have a 600 watt amp with a 6 disc CD changer attached that play through some pretty nice Polk components. You just would never know the head unit was over 30 years old unless you looked. I have ball speakers in the rear shelf. Some dealers installed them back in the day, I know FAF did. That means I have a 4 channel system with really makes all the difference and the CR-3001 supports 4 channels. The "problem" with the CR-2001 is that it only has two channels, which is fine if all you have are the door speakers. If you have more than these two speakers, the only solution with a CR-2001 is to wire it so that the left and right is front and back. This will work but it isn't the best way to listen to it. No balance option.
Good morning Dr. Tommy, did you perchance get a chance to review my private message? Thank you much, Chris.
