I try to drive my 94 512TR at least weekly, and today was the day to enjoy great weather and a good drive. Sadly when I returned home I managed to scrape my rear tire against the landscaping bricks that line my driveway. I managed to take a chunk out of the sidewall of the tire, and put a nice scratch in my recently painted rims. Note to self: consider replacing the concrete bricks with foam bricks.

As far as the tire goes, I can see the white threads under the rubber, so this tire is trash. The tires are one year old Michelin PS2 - N4 with 1,800 miles on them. I've attempted to measure the tread depth, and it looks like I'm within 1/64 to 1/32 of the original depth of 8.5 32s (according to Michelin website). Would I be lucky enough to only need a single tire, or do I need to replace both rear tires?

My second question is concerning the scratch on the rim - does this look too deep to repair? I'll take it to the Alloy repair shop that the local Porsche dealer uses to get their opinion also, but I'm interested in the feedback from those that have traveled down this road before.

Thanks in advance, and if nothing else, maybe this is my way of taking one for the team.

The good news is that it's a more conventional Aluminum alloy material (rather that the unusual "Light Alloy", with a lot of troublesome Magnesium, of the earlier cars) -- so your Porsche resource should be OK. I've had no problems using Keystone (a national wheel repair chain) to repair/repaint my TR wheels -- but I've always sent all 4 wheels to make sure the paint/finish matches well.

    John,

You mention in your post that the wheels were recently repainted, take the one wheel back to the same company and have them refinish it again.
replace the tire and you are back on the road again.

    I'm sorry for your troubles!

    IMO
