Oh, that's a very good tip Anders, thanks for sharing. Really usefull especially with CCB's as you have a very small margin between the rotor and wheel. And I do remove the wheels quite often too
For those in the USA, Ricambi has them and shipping cost and time will be reduced. They are Hill Engineering as well. They recommend 2x and I agree, it will be easier with two pins. Part: WMT-01 [WMT-01 Wheel Mounting Tool] http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?products_id=28 Question; Are the Chrome Saver Hill Engineering Lug Sockets for $85 necessary? : http://www.ricambiamerica.com/product_info.php?cPath=600_100037&products_id=261093 Part: CS-01 [CS-01 Chrome Saver Socket]
Our wheel hangers are not from Hill Engineering -- they are a different source, and work quite well. The thing I'd recommend is that folks buy these (from Ricambi, Hill, or wherever) in sets of 2x. If you only have 1x hanger, it works fine, but the wheel rocks on the hanger and you still need to use some muscle. If you have 2 hangers, everything lines up perfectly once the wheel is slid onto the hanger. The Hill Engineering CS01 is a great piece for chromed bolts. It protects both the domed head *and* the flanks from chipping.
I apologize for incorrectly labeling these wheel hangers as Hill Engineering. The reason I thought they were HE is because I clicked on HE -> Wheel Socket Tools, and this part was in the list. Please see image below. Maybe I need another cup of coffee... Do not take this as any form of disrespect; I value Ricambi's support of FChat and my group buy discount! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Haha - I also do like Ricambi a lot. Have ordered a lot of parts from them. Personal service. Just wish they were located here in Sweden. //Anders
These are the same wheel hanger used on Porsches. I paid about $10 a few years ago at my local Porsche dealer. By the way, it also works on my Audi istead of the cheap plastic one provided with the car. Cheers, Fred R.
It's what Trent wrote about : 22mm ChromeSaver socket http://www.hillengineering.co.uk/catalog/cs01-p-61.html
If you even take off and put a wheel back on just once, you will be glad you got these. I've used them for years on my BMWs (different thread diameter, so you need to get the Ferrari ones) and I can't imagine doing the job without them. I think having the ChromeSaver socket is a good idea, too, though if I had to choose between the two, I'd take the hangers every time. As between knurled and non-knurled, I suggest the non-knurled, provided they have the small hole in the end. The knurling is just to give your fingers a better grip on the pins to insert and remove them. But I can see the knurling scratching up the wheel bolt holes when you slide the wheel over them. Even without the knurling, they should be easy to insert and remove, and if one somehow gets stuck, you can insert a small diameter punch or pin in the hole for more leverage and turn it.
I agree the non-curled ends on the wheel hangers were my choice as well, so the Ricambi hangers do not have the curl, and HE sells them either way. So from Ricambi I ordered: 2 x WMT-01 (WMT-01 Wheel Mounting Tool) 1 x CS-01 (CS-01 Chrome Saver Socket) I think this is a good set for wheel removal/installation.
Cool, thanks for these explanations. I ordered already the knurled hangers and it's too late to change them (already shipped) but it will fine and anyway much better than nothing
You can always dip the ends in plastic dip (find it in the tool section of Ace or order online), or put an inch or so of heat shrink tubing on the ends and just make a punch through for the hole. Then no scratching.
Looks like the same pix was used for both items. looks like 'no knurl' would not have the knurled texture at the begining of the rod. I suspect the knurling aids in threading the rod into the lug bolt hole.
I received the wheel hangers and the Chrome Saver socket. Thanks again Anders for the great idea because this never came in my mind I posted some pictures where you can see how the knurled wheel hangers really look. As always with Hill products, they are very well manufactured. Just great stuff you enjoy to work with. The CS socket is very well made and surprise, I can be separated in two parts. Very clever These simple and cheap tools are really must have tools. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ricambi's wheel hangers are out of stock. Any other options other than the HE ones (shipping is more than the hangers themselves)? Does anyone have the thread size/pitch?
Thank you. Googled it after I posted my question (yeah should have done that first). Actually bought 2 of those exact ones
