When I was getting new tires yesterday, I found that 1 of my center caps is looking pretty bad and the other is clearly an aftermarket one. The 2 front wheels have parts 12 and 13 on them but the rears do not. Are these completely necessary? What do they do? It's like a rear cap?

Also, what is 14 in this diagram?

14 is the large o-ring gasket that mates the wheel against the flange. its like 1/4" think and 5" diameter you cant miss it if you have it,
I got the superseded wheel caps today, they just pop in nothing on the back side.

It’s designed to keep water out from the mating face of the brake rotor and wheel mounting face. Due to the metallurgy of magnesium/alloy wheel and iron rotor mating adding water can create galvanic corrosion. I would run them.

It looks like it would push the wheels out a bit as well, no? Almost like a spacer? Or does it compress?

It is not a spacer it is a rubber gasket.

Understood but you said it's about 1/4" thick so my thought is that it would still push the wheels out a bit when in place. Correct?

Ahhh got it. Fantastic. Is it common for them to be missing?

Also, any need for the backing piece - (11 and 12 in the diagram)?

20+ years later I would imagine a fair amount of cars are missing these gaskets from their wheels, but that's just my assumption.

#12 I think is another water seal set that is installed behind the wheel, I'm not certain and my car is at my remote garage so I can't check. I happened to have a spare #14 at home so I was able to grab those photos.

Interestingly enough, the ring you are showing is part 8. On the backside there is a black plastic cap with a rubber gasket that goes onto the back of the wheel. Two out of my four wheels have this in place still. It clearly seems like it's unneeded?

Yup, I realized that after I posted originally and modd'ed my post hoping to not confuse anyone.

I googled the part number for #12 and recall it, Maranello's site has good photos of it, I presume it keeps gunk/water out from behind the Cavallino cap. If it were me I'd source the 2 missing caps but it's not a priority to being able to drive and enjoy the car.

These are the kind of parts that you really need to stay on top of the tech when having routine service done like new tires installed and make sure they go back on the wheel after mounting and balancing the new tire.
