So, having the car transported back from monterey, the transport f'd my wheel up. Favorite quote, "I don't know how I could of done that." Anyway, now I need to know what to do. They're the diamond finish wheels. Autogallery says they've tried multiple times with different vendors to repair and it doesn't work. New wheel is $2,xxx. Ferrari BH says, yes, can repair $2xx. Anyone have experience repairing these wheels? Thanks! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Will the transporters insurance co buy you a new wheel? If you want it perfect that's probably the only way.
I imagine they have to pay for whatever the fix is? At least I'm going to go after them for it. But if it can be repaired, there's no need to screw him...
I have had many wheels repaired (not on my Ferraris). My Ferrari is the one car I try to keep pristine. I have never had wheel fixed where it was perfect. It's not your fault he screwed it up and he knew he was transporting an exotic. If I had screwed it up I would have bought a new one for my 458. Some of my other cars I would have just had it repaired.
I would only repair the wheel if the job would return the wheel to pristine condition. Otherwise, I would order new. I think this is fair. As an aside, can you order just one new wheel?
Machined wheels are notoriously difficult to repair properly. I would get a new wheel and send someone the bill.
Agree. The transporter's insurance should cover it. Any problems...Let them know that you are connected with thousands of FChatters, many on the west coast, who would be very interested in knowing the name of the transporter.
I curbed both diamond finished wheels on the right side of my Cali. I was told since they are diamond finished I would have to have them grinded down and refinished. At that point I decided to wait until I sold the car to have them fixed. I ultimately traded it in for a 458 spider and let the dealer deal with it. As a result I am ordering the painted wheels on my spider.
Perhaps it's just the angle of the photo, but it doesn't look like a diamond finished wheel to me. It looks painted.
I agree...first thinking it was the lighting but just not seeing any contrast between the usual diamond finish on the outside edges of the spokes against the paint down the center of spokes. Are you sure it's not a full ferro painted wheel?
if this diamond finish is a special paint or powder coat, it'd be hard to match. isn't diamond finish a type of clear coat? you may consider painting all 4 wheels to another color to match. normal shipper doesn't usually have liability. not sure if a specialized shipper would. they rely on the car owner's insurance but may cover the deductible.
Looking more closely, I agree with other posters that it looks like a painted wheel. I had my dealer repair a scratch on one of my painted wheels and I can't find where the repair was done. I had a machined wheel on another car repaired at the same time and it was a nightmare. The wheel had to be re-lathed to remove the scratch and the machining chipped off paint. I ended up with a bill for the repair and a new wheel. Machined OE wheels are a great idea - for Parts Dept sales at the dealer.
You basically turn the rim and shave a little bit off to reveal a smooth shiny surface. To repair it, you have to do the same until you are below the damaged surface. I imagine if it's too deep, the wheel would have to be replaced. In any event, it takes a specialist wheel repair shop to do it. I'm a auto damage appraiser and deal with wheel repairs a lot. I'd give Keystone a ring and per your Santa Monica location the closest one is 13642 Orden Drive Sante Fe Springs CA 90670 800-243-4340. I've seen your average mobile wheel repairs work and while most are good it's kinda hit or miss sometimes. I've been to a Keystone remanufacturing facility and it's amazing what they can do with wheels it's truly remanufacturing them not jus grinding and reprinting. They charge normally 189$ per wheel and are very fast turn around 1-2 days. I'd call them up and ask. If there is still paint left on the wheel and per your pics there is they can match the paint. They may also have remains in stock to match your wheel (probably not due to Ferrari but you never know) if so they will swap it with you, if not they can come pick up your wheel you will just need to have it unmounted first, should be door to door service as they have trucks running everywhere and I don't know of a body shop or dealership that doesn't use them. Note LKQ and Keystone are the same company, they also certify they reconditioned parts to make sure they meet OE/DOT/CAPA standards.
Take your car to Grande Prix on Newport Blvd. in Costa Mesa and get all 4 wheels powder coated black satin finish.Your wheels will look better and for only $900.00 for all 4. I had my 458 and my california done their. Takes 5 days. You can leave your car. Also I think they can have your wheel fixed.
