If you want a first class repair the wheel has to be turned on the appropriate equipment and then trued and balanced. This means dismounting the tire.

Any on-car repair would be cosmetic only.

I went through this and can attest to its value.

For minor curb/scuff damage the tire does not need to come off. The air can be let out, the bead popped, and masked and repaired, refinished, then cured and the tire reinflated.

For larger damage, then yes, the tire probably does need to come off. I have had 5 wheels with minor scuffs repaired without tire removal...they are all fine. No balance issues and they look great.

How much can it cost to dismount tires and remount?

    Do it the right way!

    You'll like the results.

The point is there is no reason to remove the tire. With the bead popped, it can be properly masked.

Once you pop the bead, the tire will move, and the whole deal will be out of balance.

Then you'll have the cost to re-balance.

Not my experience, nor of the two places that have done my repairs, but I suppose in the grand universe of possibilities it can and has happened.

I bought a car that had had this done to one wheel. About 2 cups of water were in the tire from wet sanding, you wouldn't know until the tire was off (I found out when I bought new tires). I am sure it can be done, but I have to agree with GCalo here. If it's a Ferrari wheel, it's worth 1k or more. I'd pay the extra $15 to have the tire removed, replaced, and rebalanced.

But are you certain of the source? You would be surprised how much water can be introduced from a service station air hose if their dryers aren't working properly...

Again, not my experience...but I am sure their are incompetent shops that are doing inferior work everywhere. Go with a place with a good reputation and good references...that is what I did.
