Hello all, Does anyone know what would be the maximum size (if any) for wheel spacers for a 1989 ABS version 328 with stock wheels before I get into any sort of rubbing? This is purely for the looks... I know wheel spacers might wear wheel bearings quicker, etc.
I used a half inch spacers on my front spindles , this when I had my 17 x 7.5 inch wheels, and had no problem, Im now on 17 x8 s in the front and 9 s in the back, I have never had to use a spacer in the back, 7.5 wide in the back is fine without spacers . I have a 1989 as well. 1/2 inch is all you need on the fronts, not needed in the rears. Thank you
I'd like to know the answer too, for stock wheels and tire sizes. Also, I wonder how big the spacers can be without requiring longer wheel bolts. I would think 11mm would be as big as you'd want to go with stock length bolts. I know Hill Engineering has a spacer kit specifically for the ABS 328, using 11mm front spacers and 13mm rears. The kit also includes new chrome (longer) wheel bolts. If you don't want the bolts you can buy Hill spacers separately in 11mm, 13mm, 15mm and 20mm as well. All available from Ricambi.
No. No. No. But in case I wasn't clear, let me rephase that. No. A rear ABS 328 wheel uses a stock 40mm bolt (from the end of the bolt to the start of the 27mm conical head). The stock bolt has 20mm of thread along that 40mm shank. Do the math on an 11mm spacer, and then let me know if you'd like to run stock bolts. If you do, I'll make sure to keep my family off the roads.
I had to buy two sets of longer lug nuts for my 1/2 inch front spacers, if you dont go 1/2 inch, there is no sense doing anything, anything less is useless. 1/2 inch will bring the fronts exactly where they need to be on the outside. Thank you
I asked a simple question because I was curious about the answer. Excuse the hell out of me for not knowing how long the threads are. I've only owned my 328 for 8 months and measuring the threads on my wheel bolts, or even looking closely at them, hasn't been at the top of my priority list. I've placed multiple orders with Ricambi since I bought my car and your snotty response just cost you a customer. I'll buy my future parts, including spacers and bolts, from another vendor from now on. I don't appreciate being spoken to like I'm an idiot.
You're right, Dave. My response was poor, and far below the standards which are acceptable here on Fchat and for me personally. I have taken steps to ensure this won't happen again.
While I know that maybe some take issue with Ricambi’s tone (btw as a long time contributor here, he should get a little slack imho) people should not lose sight of the message. For the most part, new bolts with added length should accompany new spacers. It just makes sense. On my old 328 GTB, I had Ricambi’s 11mm and 13mm spacer and bolt combo and they were perfect. Been a long year guys, everyone’s a little short on patience. Wishing all of you the very best in the coming new year.
Just browsing here, but didn’t the ABS 328s have a more positive offset wheel than the non-ABS cars? Presumably this was to reduce the scrub radius at the tire contact patch though how this impacts on the operation of the ABS, I’m not sure. Maybe it reduces the “hunting” of the front when on a surface with differing grip left to right. Or maybe was it just a back-spacing issue if different calipers were used for the ABS cars? Nevertheless, by adding a spacer, this geometry will obviously be affected. Any concerns about that?
Thank you for all responses! Ricambi, will be ordering a set soon with all the longer bolts… (although I must say, its a hefty price to pay for a ser of spacers with bolts ) Happy Holidays everyone! sherpa23 - do you have any pictures looking from the back or front to see how much better the car looks with those wheel arches filled?
I owned that car from 2005 to 2012 so hard to find pics. This is the only one I found that might help. It’s after it went to CA for the new owner (who still has it all this time later). Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks, I loved that car a lot. I have had various Ferraris over the years but there’s something about the 308/328 that’s just nice. I have always been in search of just the right one for my needs and I think I finally found it. I recently bought this 1981 Group 4 car. It has 15” magnesium coffin spoke wheels that fills out the fenders just right. I think it has just the right stance for me and all of the other things I love about the 308 (along with all the improvements I always wanted in mine). Adding spacers is purely for aesthetics? I’ve got an ABS car and not really a fan of the wheels compared to earlier cars. It’s fine in side profile, in fact it looks great but an angle view is underwhelming. They just look smaller due to the profiling as the centres come out markedly to account for the greater offset. I’ve had a set of three piece wheels engineered and made (spun barrels and CNC billet centres) for another car and I might try to play with the offsets (within the bounds of the stock wheels when spaced) and see if we can get a better look.
