Hi everybody, I'm getting ready to upgrade on my 78 308 GTB the stock "14" cromodora wheels to "16" in order to fit modern tyres instead of the old and expensive Michelin XWX. My parts supplier told me to fit "17"x"8" for the back and "16"x"8" for the front. What do you think? Is it better to get different wheel sizes for the front and the back? As far as looks, isn't it best to get the same wheel size for the front and the back? Last question:wich tyres would you recommend to fit on the new wheels? Cheers from Paris, olivier
I wouldn't mix wheel sizes, personally. I have 17" Speedlines on my 1977 308 GTB. 215mm tires in front, 235mm tires in back. I have Dunlops but prefer Michelins. I think they're the best street tire out there... 17" wheels give you a bit more room for a large brake upgrade, as I have. Larger rotors go up front, so you'll want the extra space up front especially. Greg
Early 308s were the same on all corners and matched the spare...later ones matched diameter and only widened the rears by an inch....... Make tire changes simple......I always like to buy five matching tires, but one of my 308s uses wider rears..those rims came with the car.
You are confused. He told you 16x7 on the front and 16x8 on the back, which was stock size for the QV. Birdman
Ferrari Parts Exchange has some nice replica wheels (the design of the 14") in a 16"). 17" wheels on a 308 look too modern imo, not as bad as when people put tall modern wheels on a 68 Camaro, but still a little off. (I saw a Mercedes yesterday with 25 aspect ratio tires – looked like a band-aid on top of the wheel!). http://www.ferraripartsexchange.com/wheels.htm Tires run on 16" on a 308 are usually 245/45/16 rears and 225/50/16 fronts. I have seen 245/50 on the rear and they looked great, but you'd probably rub the wheel well if you drive really hard or on the track. Tire choice is somewhat limited in these sizes, but these are all great tires: Yoko AVS Sports, Yoko ES100, Goodyear F-1 DS3, Michelin Pilot Cup (and Hoosier R-6 and Kumho Victoracer racing tires). (The Birdman is right about the wheel size, BTW)
Goodyear GSD3s Eagles here... 205/55ZR16 Front and 225/50ZR16 rear, and as Ken P notes my rears scuff the liners if I'm airborne, or at the top of the suspension travel..... LOL!
The 308 QV reproduction wheels that Ferrari Part Sexchange ;-) sells are the Superformance ones made in the UK (http://www.superformance.co.uk/308perf.htm) and they are considerably cheaper if you order them from there, even with shipping across the Atlantic and the bad exchange rate. FYI the stock tire size on those wheels is 205/55 front and 225/50 rear (check the QV owners manual), although many people run 225 and 245 with no problems like PenP says. Birdman
Thank you all for your answers,I'll send pics of 308 beauty when I'll get the job done in september. Cheers from Paris, olivier
My '79 308GTB ( #28133 ) has 328 wheels in 16" with the rears a little wider than the fronts. Here's how they look: http://www.308gtb.de/ and go to #28133 in the gallery.
Those are the ones I have on my car. Speedline brand, though. I don't think 17" wheels in this style look out-of-place on the 308.. They give the car a mini-GTO look...! Greg 77 308 GTB
Of course, wheels are entirely in the eye of the beholder, but I don't think 17 inch wheels are too large for a 308, but to me once you go past 17, they look too large for such a tiny car. Either 16 or 17 look great to me. I prefer the original "style" wheels so the QV wheels look right to me. The GTO "fake knock-offs" never did it for me. Birdman
These are 328 wheels but to use them on a 308, one has to modify the front axle grease caps. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I went with the 18" 550 wheels and love them....as Birdman says, it's all in the eye of the beholder.
I gotta admit, as much as I think 18's are a tad large, Mike's wheels look hot. Post a pic man! Birdman
great site, btw i saw a pic of your 308 on the internet a few years ago and i was totally smitten. if you decide to sell, PM me. john
Bob - I like the look. Can you give specs on offset, any fit issues, tire sizes. Did you buy them direct or go through a shop? Thanks, Carl
