    hello
i am just about completely stripped down on my 82 GTSi. I notice some of the original brown undercoating in some areas that were covered by other stuff. but behind the rear tires, the undercoating is a thin black rubbery layer- it looks to be a different texture than the brown stuff in other areas. it is flaking off at the edges, exposing the red body panels, so it likely is the original stuff.

does anyone know if the black thin rubber stuff behind the wheel/tire on the body is actually the same brown stuff that just turned black? or is it a different material?

i am thinking of using the brown metallic Dinitrol product to touch up the undercoating, but the thin black stuff looks nicer.

anyone have any suggestions for a think black material to minimize rock chips in this area? typical rubberized undercoating in a spray can doesnt look this nice i think.

Dinol was not used until later. Not sure what was used in 82 but there are so many available in aerosol form find something than matches the texture.

interesting to hear. If i look up on the frame behind the wheel well shields, where the undercoating is preserved better, it is definitely a brown color.

appreciate the advice - it is easier to find a regular black product than to have to match the original brown Dinol, which seems harder to find in US

So? Every dealer world wide was automatically shipped a bunch of Dinol and encouraged to sell rust protection renewal. I was one of the guys sent off learn the official way to do it. It was not used until the 4 valves came out. Your car did not come from the factory with Dinol. The rust issues on those cars is one of the reasons Ferrari started using it.

it's interesting to see the rust pattern on my 308 - the bottoms of both doors got hit hard - obvious design problem - water gets in there and just eats away at it. new lower door skins in the works for me. the only other rust spot is the rear quarters, where the metal upper quarter meets the fiberglass lower piece behind the rear tire. there was some kind of flexible sealer in that seam that failed, and water caused surface rust on the metal. easy to fix! It is interesting to find the brown undercoating on the hidden areas - my guess is that, whatever it is, it was factory applied, since it is in the areas hidden under hoses and behind panels. everywhere else it has turned black
