i have never swapped out the oem wheels on any of my cars.
but, i have been thinking about it for the 456mgt, since it needs bigger wheels. i have been following those discussions on that forum.
so far the suggestions have been mostly for novitec and some others, but the commonality is that they are all very expensive, around $600-1000 per corner.

then i was looking through road and track, and came upon those adds for wheels and tires, and noticed that wheels that look very similar also cost a lot less. so what gives? what dont i know about rims and what makes them more or less expensive.

    please tell me

There are a few basic types of wheels. Cast or Forged, and the occasionaly Carbon Fibre/forged magnesium bits of awesomness.

Cast wheels are the cheapest. Mainly becaue they are the easiest to manufacture. And some of the expensive cast wheels can be very light, but usually the cheap ones are heavy. And regardless of cheap or heavy cast wheels are the weakest of the three types of wheels.

Forged wheels are the ones that are starting to get very pricey. The manufacturing process is longer, and more expensive. But Depending on the application some of the really tough ones can be very heavy, but all the car application forged wheels are usually really light. These wheels are generally stronger than a cast wheel.

Carbon Fibre/forged magnesium wheels are very pricey. I don't tink I need to explain why. But I will anyway. CF is pricey, so is the forged magnesium. Bonding the metal and carbon takes time. End result is some of the strongest wheels on the market and light enough to be picked up by my pinky finger without dislocating the joint.

Things to watch out for, because I am sure you prize your Ferrari. Buy proven wheels. Ferraris are fast. They demand a lot from all their components including the wheels and tires. Getting subpar quality wheels = you would get firsthand experience on what heikki kovaleinen experienced when his wheel collapsed last year.

Here is a list of good companies to get them from.
    -Enkei
    -BBS
    -OZ Racing
    -Dymag
    -Rays Engineering
    -AME(Enkei makes these)
    -Wedsports
    -TSW
    -SSR

There are more but I can't remember them.

Lastly check to make sure they fit your cars bolt pattern. Each manufacturer has a different bolt pattern, for all I know different Ferraris could even have different bolt patterns.

I believe the bolt pattern on your car is 5 X 108 with a 67mm hub diameter/center bore.

And remember to get a different profile tire to match the overall diameter, otherwise it will throw the speedometer reading.

your factory tires I believe are 255/45zr17 front and 285/40zr17 back.

Thats an overall 26.035inch at the front and 25.976 at the back.

So effectively if you uprgade to 18 inch rims you are looking at 255/40zr18 front and roughly 295/35zr 18.

    Hope that helps.

    Regards,
    Krish

I think basic (unloved) 550/575 standard wheels are larger than 456 standard but fit your car - might be worth a look - ask in the 456 section

There are loads of decent wheel manufacturers, for example the ones listed above and then others like Novitec, HRE etc.

Whether you get 3rd party wheels is completely up to you - they can look great but can ruin your car's appearance also.

They are expensive, but for some owners, modifying wheels makes their car that much more personal :)

    Ah yes HREs are nice.

But NOVITEC wheels are probably like the AME wheels outsourced and made by one of the above manufacturers. If not I guess the novitecs are a good option. But I dunno I cant see them looking too good on a 456.

    My honest opinion?

Go for the 575M Rims. I can really see those working with the 456. Those are OEM Ferrari wheels, so you know those are quality pieces.

But rims are personal so it's really up to you.

Just please don't by that Tenzo R, And some Nitro crazy X brand style crap. I can gurantee those will cost you more in the long run.

i was watching "supercars exposed" w/ Tanner when he was visiting Novitec and I could of swore that they said the wheels were made in house.

If that is the case I guess they do make it in house. I have never seen them lying around, so I never read the casting marks on the back of the spokes, that usually tells me who made them. NOVITEC is a niche brand that I haven't explored yet so I know very little about them. Thanks for the info.

Krish- Actually, Novitec NF2s (Enzo copies) look fantastic on a 456/M. The trouble is they are $6000+ for a set of wheels alone. The factory 19" 575 modulars look great on a 456, too, but again $6000 or so.

Put Ferrari on anything and the price goes up.

Hmmmm well I like those NF2 better on the 575 or the 550. The 456 looks a bit too tall with it. The wheels are fantastic. But like I said. It suits the slightly lower proportioned Ferraris. But thats my opinion.

But ya those 575 rims look awesome.

But I mean its just not Ferrari stuff thats pricey. Lots of the high quality Forged wheels are around the 4500-6000 mark.

These suckers on the other hand are 12grand last I checked.
