I've noticed something I believe is not normal, but would like to know if anybody has experienced the same thing...

I had the car on jacks and started the engine to warm up the oil before replacement. The car is in neutral, but the rear wheels start spinning ! After double checking that it was in fact in reverse, I've tried to stop the movement at the wheel, but it's not easy !

So guys, is this normal, has anyone had the same thing happening ?

    Thanks!

Friction in the gearbox (oil etc) will make the transmision move when in neutral and wheels off the ground.

Not just friction Russell. When it's "engaged", then the movement of the shafts is locked together. But even before that, they are all spinning independantly.

When in neutral, EVERYTHING in the gearbox moves and every shaft turns. That's why it's imperative that you wait until your engine and gearbox are fully warmed up, before you rev your engine with impunity.

The guy who starts his engine and revs it up really high to hear that great Ferrari sound before the gearbox is fully warmed up too, is putting enormous wear and tear on the gears. It's like metal-on-metal.

I wrote about this in the 308/328/Mondial thread too.

Thanks guys ! It feels much better to know it is normal.
For the record, I NEVER go above 3,000 rpm until all temperatures have reached their normal operating values.
