Darwin awards? Not sure that society benefited by removing those genes from the gene pool. Amazing to watch and sad at the same time
Very sad some of those. I literlly yelped when the guy hit the tree, and again when the car caught fire. Were prewar GP cars that easy to spin or does it just seem so when you watch it over and over? They look like they have no grip from those skinny tires at all.
That was a great video, not sure about the music... but absolutely love seeing the history of racing. Racing back then, even though slower, looks much more dangerous than today. thank god for the airbag
The main problem was that engine development was superior to chassis- & suspension development. So the cars were much too strong for their tiny suspensions and chassis Basicly this was until the end of the 50s. It changed in the early 60s. Drive a 12 cyl.-Ferrari from the 50s. Very fast - but it handles like a truck (like many other sports- or race cars - despite the little Porsches!). Ciao! Walter
Best advice - if you survived the crash, get out of the car because you may not survive the second, third,.... crash.
before the French GP, 1956. Fangio is the only one in this group to survive the 1950s. Nothing but a thin sheet of aluminum between you and eternity in most of the 1950s comp cars. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wow. What a compilation. Certainly some lives were lost in that video, but imagine the lives that were enriched? Choice: Hunker down, put on a bicycle helmet to go to the toilet, drive your Prius in the slow lane.. or... Live like a man. My hats off to everyone in that video. Now, if you don't mind, I'm going for a nice long ride on my motorcycle. Thanks Jim.
yea and they didn't have radials. Here is one of my favorites check out the condition of the track! [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7Ifcgl789E[/ame]
...and REAL noises came from the exhaust and engine.... We are trully blessed(by something, not necessarily religious.)that we can get into something and get the same shiver down the spine.
And you have a guy like Sterling Moss actually saying motor racing is too safe today, after seeing his contemporaries die on a regular basis.
He is right, because the increased safety has allowed people to drive poorly as the threat of getting hurt or killed is so much less now. Back when peoples life was on the line evey race, the drivers respected that and drove accoridingly. Not so much anymore....... There was no Scumacher chopping going on
Really no seat belts at all for quite a few of those scenes featured. In open wheel prewar cars, the perceived wisdom was it was better to be thrown from the car in the event of a crash. This video gives some examples of why...
