Unlike traditional shocks that need a rebuild when the inner valves and seals leak, magneride shocks supposedly have no mechanical valves or small moving parts that can wear out. Instead of the same viscosity fluid running through different valve sets as in more traditional dampers, the magnetic fluid has variable viscosity running through fixed orifices. The fluid is low viscosity initially and becomes more viscous when a magnetic field is applied. The system can vary the viscosity in milliseconds to give almost instant variability. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/design-development-and-applications-magneride-suspension

That said, there is still a moving rod and piston, which has to be sealed in some way, and I would think that seal can eventually wear. So I'd guess they need a refresh at such time they start leaking or lose their effectiveness.

Thank you for the great detailed explanation.
This system, to me appears to be far better in terms of performance and more robust, than the air suspensions or hydraulic suspension which are used by other the other brands such as Mercedes,

I would think so, yes. There is nothing that can leak internally AFAIK. So if there are no external signs of leaking and the car is still handling normally, you should be good to go. Literally.

100K that's great. Is there a noticeable difference in the damping effect of the shock at this milage?

I'll add to this for more context. Some people may assume external leak would mean leaking onto the ground, and in shocks/struts that's highly unlikely. It'll likely be more of a build up around the shock/under the dust cover of a slow/seeping leak that collects dust/dirt/grime. Inspect the shocks individually.

I'd also love to see a shot of the interior of a 100k mile car.

Tue carnhas standard leather in black and and carbon fiber everywhere else—door cards, dash/vents/ center console and less/drivers zone.

The car is parked every day out in the glorious Southern California sun. I do have the heat insulating windshield and always use a dash protector when parked.

Dash leather and seat leather look like any 2014 458.

I’ve spilled several diets cokes from the drive thru on my black carpets. But they clean up pretty well.

(The cup holder is a bit too shallow to securely hold large drinks)

ok Diet cokes aren't good for your health man.

The only coke that is safe to drink are the glass bottle ones from Mexico that use real sugar.

That’s amazing. I bought the extended two year bumper to bumper on my 458 and didn’t get to use it once. All the best man , Kirk.

it's amazing the 458 magnetic shocks can last 100k miles without leaking @@....R8 ones leak every 20-30k or so and is prob the only costly thing that always break on the car

Ricambi has them at $2,269 each. What is worrisome is that shocks for front lifter cars are “unavailable”!

I did some reading about failure of mechanical products. There is a slight higher rate of failure in the early aftermarket period which can be largely attributed to parts which although new had some defect/weakness or were improperly assembled— in spite of being brand new. This is why using/driving a new car is essential to shake out these problems.

Next things enter a steady state if the car is driven regularly. This a fairly low incidence of mechanical problems for the majority of the life of the car component. Then we enter a ‘late phase’ when many components fail at a much higher rate. Obviously each component has a different and specific life.

One of the interesting anomalies with Ferrari’s is that many cars don’t see regular use. In fact you may find a ‘used’ car which has sat and may still have old gas from the factory fill in the tank!

When I bring my car into the service center, I enjoy browsing around looking at the cars getting serviced and talking to the mechanics. After a while, they got to know me and then felt comfortable telling me about the work they were doing on the car that was in their bay.

Many times they told me stories about weird issues which they believed were the result of the car not being driven.
Of course I did sometimes get criticized for putting way too many miles on my cars. In fact one mechanic used to give me dirty looks because I’d bring my car in dirty and with more miles on the clock too!

He wasn’t used to seeing a car like mine . I think he felt I was treating the car with disrespect.

Of course, I’ve gone through several sets of tires. My current preference in the MPS4. I’ve done the front pads. There was a driver side window misalignment which I suspect occurred during a service visit and not from me! The seven year service plan has seen multiple oil changes, filters, two sets of spark plugs, power steering and coolant flushes. I did have a problem with the fuel filler neck giving a check engine light. I had a bad oil pressure sender. (There was a weather strip which was separated upon delivery)
And the factory battery went flat at 9 months.
