People often say back in "the day" when referring to times past. But exactly WHEN was "the day"? It often seems to refer to the late 70s time frame. But is that universally accepted? If a 90 year old guy refers to "the day", is he talking about 1935 when he was running around in a raccoon coat doing the jitterbug while chasing skirts in the "speak easys"? Define "the day".

I don't think you can peg a year on it, it's whatever era the particular person remembers having good times or being happier than today. Personally, "the day" to me is the present. It's quite depressing being around someone that lives in the past.

"the day" is a variable with direct correlation to ones age. It is not a specific time in the past. You have to put it context of the person saying it. Back in "the day" for me would not be the same as back in "the day" for my father, or his, for that matter.

"The Day" was June 11, 1989 when I was struck by lightning and became ruler of the unknown universe.

OK, as long as we're on this subject.....

Back in the day, was there a certain room somewhere which housed "The Table?"

and the door to this room...was this "The Door" in which there was "A Foot?"

And when one was halfway into this room, with his "Foot in the Door" and a "Deal on the Table", did the clock on the wall read "The Eleventh Hour?"

    Do tell...

"The day" describes "the day" that was "the day" of "the day" that made "the day" "the day".

Techincally "the day" singluar is in the future, as in, "that will be the day." "The days" were in the past, because those were the days. They also don't make them like they used to. This applies to expressions and good topics on F-chat. ;)
