When you are NOT a reader

Easiest way to start is to choose another book by an author you've enjoyed previously.

If you liked The Firm, odds are you'll enjoy some other Grisham titles. Suggest you stay away from 'The Chamber' for a while, it's pretty dark, but 'A Time to Kill' was actually his first, and a good compelling read.

After that, look for similar-style books (i.e. legal/courtroom dramas) by different authors.

Do you not even read non-fiction business books? Books on tape?

I'm not really a fiction reader - I think I've read one novel in the past two years. But I read a lot of business, econ, and industry-specific books (ie. movie industry, music, etc).

Maybe you just haven't found what you really like.

You have to find a subject or author that enamours you, ie I read all of the Harold Robbins books (lol), and the autobiographies of Donohue, Ellerbee, Madden, DeLorean, folks like that.
Clifford Stoll books are good reads, and I like TRUE books on the cold war stuff, stealth fighter stuff, etc.

But I could never sit down and read fiction like James Michener, Tom Clancy, etc., I think I'd be bored to tears...

 

I've found that the only time I can really stick with a book is if I'm on vacation. Life just seems to get in the way of reading for me. I like the Robert Ludlum books, as well as Clive Cussler, which are easy books to get into if you like action/spy type stuff. I made the mistake of reading "Atlas Shrugged" while on vacation, which is about 100 pages of rehashed philosophy "crammed" into 1000 pages.

 

Skip the first 10-15 pages . Actually, there are some good writers that are "slow starters" that don't get moving for 50 pages but then rock, then there are some that never get moving (like Atlas Shrugged). Do you like thrillers, mysteries, sci-fi, westerns? Find a list of top authors for the genre you like and see if they have short story collections. The nature of the short story forces the author to get going and you can sample their style quickly and see if you want to read full novels by that author. Louis Lamour, Stephen King, etc are a couple of prolific authors that have a lot of short stories too. You'll miss many authors with this approach since a lot don't work in short stories, but you may have a higher hit ratio for those you do read.
