Where are the detailing pros? 84 QV Paint and Detailing Questions

    So what type of paint did ferrari use back in 84? Enamel, Lacquer, one stage, etc? Also, what is the best method for polishing and prepping for wax for these cars? I have a Porter Cable polisher but not sure what product to use for the swirls in this old paint. (If there is an old thread on this just point me there cuz I couldn't find it.) Thanks.

    Plenty of threads on this, but I'll answer it quickly anyway.

    Two types of paints were used: Bianco, Giallo, Rossa Corsa and Nero were all single stage Glasurit acrylics. The rest of the colors were base-clear, also from Glasurit.

    As for detailing, any high-quality machine polish system will work. I prefer Griot's Garage products, because they are very high quality, totally guaranteed, plus they are local to me. (They also support many of the Ferrari/Italian car functions. Products are not really any more expensive than Meguires, Mothers or other off-the-shelf products.) I've used the products on all types of paint finishes (single and base-clear) with great results.

    In your case, I'd wash, use the clay bar (with Speed Shine) to remove dirt attached to the paint, then use Machine Polish 1,2 and 3 to remove etching and swirls. I like their Carnuba Wax stick, because it applies and removes so easily, but Best In Show is also provides a tough, yet deep shine.

    Sam - Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure what was different about my 504/C metallic paint and you answered that. My question is: how aggressive can/should I get with the polishing? Is Megs 105 too abrasive? I also have some Menzerna P085RD that someone gave me. Is that more or less abrasive than the Megs 105? Apologies if all of this is in a thread somewhere but I couldn't find it.

    Megs 105 is really, really coarse stuff, but I challenge you to burn through your paint with the PC and Megs 105. There are some YouTube videos of guys just holding it in one spot for minutes and it never burns through.

    I used both a PC and also a rotary buffer with Megs 105 and 205. The PC with Megs 105 won't hurt your paint, but the downside to that is that it doesn't really cut all that much. If your paint is really bad, you'll need to actually sand it and then use a rotary polisher. They're cheap though, I got mine at Harbor Freight for less than $50. That thing will definitely burn through the paint, so you have to be more careful. It's easy enough....

    If you use the Porter Cable, you're not going to burn through the paint My 328 is similar in color (Blu Medio) and I think you'll find that going from a quick run of the more aggressive to a good pass with the finer polish will remove all those swirls and leave you with a very nice finish -- perfect for a one or two layers of high-quality wax.

    The paint on the Ferraris is pretty tough, but just keep away from the edges, like on the butresses.
