Where can I get it wired?

Hello All,

I have a 1989 328GTS that needs interior wiring - dash lights are SUPER dim, when the e-brake is pulled the driving/fog light icon lights up, the air conditioner seems kaput, or close to it, etc. The problem is I live in El Paso, Texas and the closest Ferrari dealer is 400+ miles away (Scottsdale, Arizona) and the next one is San Antonio, Texas (500+ miles). I'm reluctant to take it to a border electrical shop for obvious reasons. Does anyone know of a reasonable, reliable place in New Mexico or West Texas I can get it worked on? This summer has been one of frustration!

You might want to try this post in the regional forums, AZ/NM and/or TX, for a more local answer.

You might also want to check generic auto alarm or audio forums for a good automotive electrical shop in the area, such as an alarm or stereo installer --- although several of the issues with older Ferrari wiring are frequently the results of sloppy aftermarket installations.

Last time I looked, the 328's wiring diagram book was out of stock from Ferrari, but you should be able to find a PDF online.

Try Ron Francis Wire Works.com..He makes entire wiring packages for every electrical system in a car. Incredibly reasonable. He's been around for decades..He has every concievable wiring application imaginable for custom rodders and diyers.. bullet-proof and and an absolute no-brainer. I hope this is some help to you..Jacques. You can do this.

 

How did it get to be in such a state? did something happen to it?

He is one of the best mechanics I have ever met. He regularly fixes electrical problems on Porsche 928s which no one else will even touch. I can't speak highly enough of his skill. In IMHO replacing the harness would be overkill unless it is shorted/damaged. Based on your description, it seems like you have a loose/corroded ground point somewhere. When did the symptom start, any work done to the car ect?

 

I would consider bringing it for you. Since you live where you do however, Gary Bobileff in San Diego is fantastic as well.

My thanks to all for the helpful replies. You've provided solutions literally from one coast to the other.

To answer Scott's question - I'll call Jim's Fine Autos next week and try to arrange it there. Albq. is less than 300 miles away. And, yes Scott, I'll be sure to tell him you referred me!

To answer Yelcab, it was working pretty well when I drove it from NYC to here, but has lost most of the dash lighting (all at once) since then. I believe the dash fog/driving light indicator has been linked with the e-brake since I got it. It runs well with the exception of the starter (replaced) which often does not kick in. As a result I park it on a small downgrade to save me the humility of having to push it to start it. It would seem all the problems tie into the electrics - but that's a guess.

To all of you, my deepest thanks. Although El Paso has some good points it sometimes seems as though they spell civilization here with an "s".

My suggestion is to have someone troubleshoot it instead of just replacing all the harness.

The harness may not be your problem at all. This type of problem is a pain and it takes much hands-on effort to solve, by a competent electrician. No amount of on-line guessing will help much.
