SCOT, you have two choices that I have found. First is Ferrai part #95970135 priced at about 1200.00 dollars. Second is Baum tools at www.baumtools.com you will have to look under Porsche, engine/belts to find it #9201 it goes for about 900.00 dollars. I have been told by a few Ferrai mechanics that it is the only way to check belt tension. Good luck, Pete

The Staeger tensiometer is available from www.928gt.com for about $535.00, also from Pelican Parts and other sources but I'm not sure of their prices. I don't I believe it is the only or most accurate method though - this is just a variation on the deflection method (krikit, burroughs?) using a more expensive tool. I used a Gates 505C sonic tension meter - $75 on Ebay during my 348 major. You just have to make sure to plug in the right mass & distance numbers and such and just pluck the belt and voila. I'm not a pro but the sonic (freqency) technique seems to be the most accurate from what I have been told. So far it has worked on my cars just great and I will not go back to the deflection method. I'd like to hear what the professional mechanics on the board have to say.

I have done 4re belts since 1980 in my home garage. Steager is not really availalbe. The Ferrari unit uses different "units" than the Porsche unit. If you see the manual the steager number is "x". But it is not in n-cm or ft-lbs or anything just an unknown steager claibration. Anyway, I learnd to do belts by hand from noted Independant and two FNA dealermechanics. Now FNA may say they use a Steager but I have visited several shops around my area and for some reason some other mechanic was always using the steager. I have never seen one and do not know a single mechanic who has one. I may have egg all over my face but I would love to see a digital picture from any mechanic with a steager on todays newspaper! If you PM me I'll tell you the secret trick to get your belts right. I use three hand methods to tension one varifying the other. Oh and there is science behind why it works but I can't explain the math but it not so far off from shan's mass/density flux capactance thingy. Also, I have never had a belt go bad on any of my streetcars nor my one track car plus I stressed on of my streetcars plenty with lots of nitrous.
