Just curious. What make your daughter decide on Brown?

    Thx

My daughter will be starting at Rhodes College in Memphis this fall. It's a long way from home (Hawaii), which I think is the main idea.

It was always her first choice. No core curriculum. Not cut throat like other schools she got into (e.g. Johns Hopkins). Excellent advisor system that works with the students to help them design a curriculum. The school is constantly expanding the number of Profs, who do the bulk of the teaching. The kids work hard but are willing to share notes, etc. The student body seemed extremely happy when we visited (this did not upset the school's leadership). A Liberal slant (which is OK in my book). We were impressed with the President (Harvard trained African American female). Very nice campus. An old Ivy League School with an excellent academic reputation. Active Hillel. Providence is now a very nice city. Only 3 1/2 hour drive from home (NYC); we told her no more than a 5 hour drive. Dad can iceboat nearby if and when he visits. Dad will pay.
P.S. My best friend's daughter is finishing her first year at Dartmouth, and is also very happy. Congrats.

Very wise move about Hopkins. My daughter did a summer session there and said it was beyond intense.

For my daughter, it was between Dartmouth and Yale. Yale had a strong pull because her prep school (Andover) is a historic feeder school. Thus, she had several teachers pushing hard for the Big Blue.

But the big three of Harvard, Yale, and Princeton are going through dem changes. For better or worst, they no longer see themselves as US insititutions. They are, instead, international schools.

Dartmouth, on the other hand, is what you picture as a traditional liberal arts college. It used to have a rep as a party school, but I think MIT has taken over this mantle. (Seriously!)

Only problem with the D is that it is miles and miles and miles from anywhere. Plus, it get really cold up there.

Back on point, though, all the Ivies, have, IMNSHO, taken their eye off the ball. Instead of going after the very best students that they can get, regardless of sex, race, color, and creed, they are instead attempting to use their admission processes to correct past sins. We'll see in the end, but I'm afraid that they will end up shooting themselves in the foot. Because the talent that they would have taken in the past will be going instead to the non-Ivies or other great schools. The cream always rises.

But do give us an update on Brown in a year or so. I have a 17-year old son who swears that he will not work as hard as his sister. Maybe Brown might be the ticket.

    Thx, Dale
