I moved to this "wonderful" (note sarcasm) city a little over two years ago for work. Coming from Orange County, I was used to a good car culture. Nice cars are the norm in OC. I came with my M5 and GT3. I learned very quickly that houston isnt anything like OC! The very first weekend I was here a valet curbed 2 of my brand new HRE's on my M5. Thats like murder in OC... and, they stuck me with the bill saying they didnt do it. As well, people would literally gawk at my cars... i never leave my cars stock so they have nice wheels and other goodies but, still, its just an M5. I came out of Eddie V's one night and people were literally taking pictures of my GT3. At that point, I knew I was on a different planet!

I work downtown so I live inside the loop.... the roads are abysmal..... narrow, poorly maintained, pot holes, inverse potholes (drive down westheimer and you know what Im talking about). As well, there isnt a hill or a nice curvy road within 75 miles.

In OC, there was always a good destination to take a drive to. Up and down PCH, to dinner at the beach, good canyon roads, to the mountains etc etc. As well the roads are pristine. Not a pothole in sight.

Now, here I am, about to pick up an 09 Scud and Im starting to question why when I live in a place like houston.... Am I insane?

Can someone please shed some light if I am missing where there is to drive to in this place? a nice drive... a HILL, perhaps?? A reasonable destination worth driving to?? (PLEASE DO NOT SAY GALVESTON) I am finally throwing in the towel and will be moving a little outside of the loop this fall... the streets are better out there from what i hear, so thats a plus.

    Sorry for the rant.... thanks!

Allen Parkway...up and down. That's about all we have. haha

There is a good road in Brookshire, and another down 59 south near Crabb River Road. Both are really nice curvy roads but unfortunately watched by the po-po and inhabited by motorcyclists so you can't go WFO.

There's always track days at MSR...it's only 45 min away!

    Texas!
Get out a map and find Highway 290 west going toward Austin. Follow it until you come to a small town called Burton. (It is pass Brenham.) Zoom down, and you'll see a highway called 390 hat turns north and then back around to the east. If you can't find it, search for Gay Hill, Texas. I'm not kidding.

Very cool run, but be forewarned, it is two-lane with a lot of sharp curves. Plus, you'll never know when you will run into Bubba on a hay truck.

About 2/3rds of the way through this run, you'll intersect Highway 50 that runs into College Station. It turns into a long straight shot along the river bottom. I have heard tell of people doing a "Ferrari Tune Up" on this road, but I have never done so myself.

According to those who know, the best time for this run is say 8:00 on Sunday morning...

However, your best bet is to join the local FCA and ask Grady Owens for some recommendations.

Have fun, but remember you are driving on public roads. If you really want to drive your car, I highly recommend MSR.

I live inside the loop in the Heights, where about do you live? Because of the heat in Houston early morning drives are the way to go. Do you have an Easy Tag for your cars? I usually drive up the Hardy Tollway, not many places for the cops to hide so you can do spurts over a hundred if you are inclined to do that. I head up the Hardy to Beltway 8 and go East and ride it around until I hit 45. I head up 45 North back up to the Heights. It's about a 60 mile drive with not much traffic.

I tried several times to get a bunch of FCars together to go for a drive. I only managed to make it happen once so I sort of gave up. There is a Scud owner and a few 360's that have been out driving but they drive on I10 which is usually congested and patrolled so you can't drive very fast.

PM me if you want to go driving tomorrow. If anybody else wants to go for an early morning drive let me know.

The best drive for me is to go from Beltway 8 after Richmond on Westpark Tollway - First you go through the Tunnel -FAST - Make sure to go in a gear 2 or 3 the car will scream in side the tunnel - then go all the way towards Rice village on Westpark and there are some underbridges etc... For a quick spirited ride that is a good run...

    Same with 290.

If one exits one of the many exits after getting past Fairfield just drive.

The best driving is discovering your own roads. There's lots of backroads off of 2920.
