I know this has been covered here before but I can't seem to find the old threads. What is a good source for a used Ferrari? I'm looking to spend in between 28k and 35k, most likely a 308 QV. I'd prefer a Euro spec. Thanks

It depends on what part of the country you live in. I looked at your profile and there was no indication of your neighborhood.

    Allow me...

"A good place "... usually is a pleasure place to be in, full of happiness, smiling face and sweet wording, a place where you feel like home, no strangers, in this case a place that have many 308's to choose from, honest, free from fraud, decent price and good aftersell service.... let me know if you find such a place I want to live there...

Private owners are usually the best bet. However, there are two dealers I check out whenever I am in the area. 1) Fantasy Junction in Emeryville (San Fran) Calif and 2)Motorcar Gallery in south Fl. Both places have good reputations, deal in a wide variety of cars and are upfront about their cars.

The BEST place to find a used Ferrari is in an old barn that hasn't been opened for 50 years, where some guy bought a brand new Ferrari, parked it after going 20 miles and died the next day.

Outside of that, the internet, Ebay, your local dealer...there is no "best" way as there are shark filled waters, as well as fair deals, in all these places.

www.fantasy-motors.com . Call them, not all cars are listed on their web page and they can locate what you are looking for if they don't have it

A licensed Ferrari Dealer....No worries on getting a car with stories. I would first suggest the oldest dealer in the US - Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo - Portland Or. Talk to Greg

You can always try Martin at Cavallino Motors.

He has, and can always find, good, recently maintained cars.

As a bonus, he is also an active FChat poster, member, and sponsor - got to support those sponsors!

Right now he has a really cool - pretty much 1 off - 308 Spider that could be called a good car at a bargain price.

Go to his website - www.cavallinomotors.com - or call him 888 922 7393 - ask for the Screamah.

I'm shopping for my first Ferrari as well and contacted a few dealers (including Ron Tonkin) to let them know what I was looking for. I did look at a 328GTS at Ferrari of Denver and found Bill Orth to be extremely helpful when it came to explaining what to look for on those cars. I can see the wisdom and comfort in paying a bit more to buy from a dealer the first time. Maybe not all the salespeople are real Ferrari people, but some of the more experienced ones (like Bill) have worked on Ferraris and really know all about those (expensive) bits and pieces.

I'm sure more experienced f-chat'ers know the best non-dealer channels, but for now I second Mike's comment.

If this is your first F car I would go to a dealer. They can offer warranties on used cars and they must tell you the in and outs of the car with no holds barred. Once you have been an owner, I would look to private seller and dealers. If you want a top end great car with all the records it's hard to beat the dealer. Also you are forging a relationship that can lead to purchase of a new car when the time is right.

    Jon,
If you wanted to take a step up to a 348 Tonkin has a red one that is just a cream puff. New major, new clutch, not a scratch. Everytime I go in I second guess myself on my car. Best example of a 348 I have ever seen.
    For what it is worth,

By "good place", I meant a good source. Internet sites, car dealers with a good reputation, ect. I live in Scottsdale AZ. Thanks for your help.

I bought a 328gts from SportAuto in Summerfield NC. I looked on my own for about 7 months and I don’t know how many miles. They found me what I was looking for, for what I considered a fair price. Steve Barney is the owner, very knowledgeable. His lead mechanic/tech, probably one of the best I’ve come across, Tom Jones went over car before I took delivery. The car has functioned flawlessly since I’ve owned it. Good people to deal with…. great car.

1.What you see is what you get
2.Owner probably has no idea of how to do a patch job(something that only lasts the 30 day warranty) and only taken care of by a professional.
3.Most likely not selling the car for a profit,so things were fixed the right way for longevity.
4.Condition has been mainteained as how you see it,vs a car that was a rat for 10 years and given a heavy compound and die job that would look great to the untrained eye. Look at all of the surroundings of a private party vehicle.I think you can learn alot about a car from the owner and the surrounding area before you even bother with a PPI.
5.Dealers need to maximize profit on use cars because they only get so many new ones and its not nearly enough to stay in business.
6.Use the dealers to maintain your car but your first choice should be private party.

You must be passionate about cars to even consider a Ferrari but do not make your decision based on passion alone. Your choice of cars should be driven by passion alone but never purchase on passion. If you buy a car and dont know how the car was treated prior to your ownership, you may have an experience that will taint your view of all Ferrari's.
