As it is expected Alonso will sign a 2 year contract with Renault with the possibility of exit for poor performance at the end of 2008. Flavio was able to persuade Carlos Ghosn to offer Alonso a yearly salary in excess of 20 million Euros. Some of this money comes from their mexican sponsor Carlos Slim but on the condition that Nelsinho Piquet becomes the second driver at Renault.

So what happens to Heikki Kovalainen?...all the good seats are getting filled, as Ron Dennis is reported to be signing Pedro dela Rosa under pressure of the spanish sponsors for the loss of Alonso.

Maybe he'll have to do a "Hakkinen 93": Sit on the bench and watch Andretti aka de la Pink not deliver until he gets fired and Heikki can come in.

Ron Dennis and Mercedes want to win VERY badly, especially to make up for 2007. Whatever the Spanish sponsors want MB will make up the difference to save face.

I am not ready to concede the second McLaren seat to Pedro as of yet, he is OK, but not even nearly as good a your favorite punching bag: Massa. Heikki can be a winner in a great chassis, the only problem being, what if the FIA decides with four weeks to go before Australia that the McLaren is too "Ferrari like"? Would Heikki Kantspellhis name really want to be stuck in that delema? Unless McLaren has a second chassis ready, it could take the first four races before McLaren can get up to speed.

Didn't Flavio say Renault will have new drivers. I think that's a pretty clear message to Heikki. However I don't think he's ready to sink as low as Ralph and Giancarlo. The guy did pretty well this year, but he could end up without a seat next year.

I think he's still a major contender for the Mclaren seat, and I doubt he'd worry too much about the FIA's 4-week-prior-notice if he got offered a Mclaren seat.

What's the connection of Mexican Carlos Slim and Brazilian Nelson Piquet, Jr.? Does Slim own a company that sponsors Nelson?

De la Rosa as second driver would be great for Hamilton, but there is a reason he's their test driver. Although the spanish sponsorship argument makes sense - does anyone know who's backing Kovalinen from a financial standpoint?

According to Forbes Carlos Slim is the richest man in the world. He controls American Movil a wireless comunication company and the largest corporation in Latin America, which in turn runs Claro the largest cell phone company in Brazil. Nelsinho is one of Brazil's heroes.
