I found a small nail in the tread on the rear tire and don't want to pull it out until i have a new tire.
The pressure is fine and it might not have punctured the tire.
    BTW what will it cost?
    Thanks
    Eric

The tire store or anywhere that sells the brand tire you are trying to replace. Tirerack does have good prices , but I have been able to get tires for close to the same price at my local Goodyear store

Before you replace one tire, check the tread wear. You can ask your local dealer how much wear is acceptable when you replace only one tire. If there is too much wear, you'll probably need to buy 2 tires, not one.

2,700 miles is quite a bit if the car has been driven hard. On the other hand you could always have it patched, nowadays they last the entire life of the tire.

Save yourself some $$ and have the tyre plugged and patched; it'll be fine.

I don't know if I would automatically replace both rear tires...definately the one (NO PLUG!) but have the thread measured on wear and make the decision then. I would think the other tire is at least 75% left, if not more (given the early miles are normally very "easy")

A good patch from the inside should be fine.....$20 versus $250

What would you do if you punctured the tread on a tyre on your daily driver; replace both tyres either front or rear...... I don't think so!?!?

Obviously, many of you aren't familiar with tyre repair techniques. A plug and patch done properly in the tread area can make the tyre as good as new.

If you enjoy throwing money away, the tyre manufacturers will love you!

I'm no expert on tire repair techniques but I do know one thing. They aren't tested or warrantied to work on a ferrari at 150+ mph. Personally, my life is worth than 200 bucks. I wonder why manufactures put this disclaimer on their repairs "Dunlop Safety Advisory, Speed Rated Tires: Repaired tires must not be used in excess of posted speed limits, in race or other competition. Speed Ratings are not valid for repaired, re-treaded, under-inflated or overloaded, excessively worn, damaged or altered tires."

I wouldn't want to be the one to find out the hard way. but thats just me.

I have plugged my own tires for 35 years and never had a failure. You can buy the tire plugging kits for a song and plug the tire without even taking it off the car. It will never fail. Buying a new tire is a waste of money.

Any tire that has a puncture or run low on air pressure should be dissmounted and inspected as a majority of the damage to the tire structure occures on the inside and is not visible without dissmounting.
There are speed rated patches approved by Goodyear, Pirelli, Bridgestone. I cannot speak for other manufacturers. See attached. It is critical to repair prior to water getting into the injury as the water will begin to corrode the steel belts.
Simply plugging the tire is not acceptable niether is a simple patch. If in doubt replace the tire. If you are going to have more than a 30% difference in tread depth (for a rear tire) the car will experience a pull under hard accell and decell due to circumference difference.
As you can see this speed rated patch seals the inner tube portion of the tire and the injury site. It also requires special site prep and sealant to qualify fo speed rating.
With low and ultra low tires if they have been run even slightly low on air pressure there is likely structural damage to the tire and it will need replacing. This damage is not visible without dissmounting the tire.
Anyone who states they can inspect a tire without dissmounting it is guessing at best.

So who here drives their cars regularly at 150+mph? I would hope no one, unless it's strictly a track car!

    Nuff' said?

I was in the tyre business for many years, and never saw a tyre fail because it was plugged/patched.

Exactly, I have done it for years. By the way most punctures are picked up in the parking lot of Home Depot and Lowes. Those guys leave staples drywall screws and nails all over their lots. The vast majority of Punctures are from screws. You should inspect your tires often for nails or screws as most do not deflate the tire for months. So if you find 1 tire lower than another then rotate it and check for foriegn objects. I find most of mine that way. It is a safe bet that at least 10% of tires have something stuck in them. Wether it has penetrated completely through the tire is another thing. Most objects penetrate between the groves or indents in the rubber. Anyone who drives for any length of time on any tire with less that 15lbs of air should have it dismounted and checked. If you find an object in your tire and you still have air then it is safe to pull that object out and plug it. When I say plug it I mean performing the proper procedure to plug a tire. This can be done while still on the car. If anyone thinks that they need to replace a tire when finding an object in it and the tire was never driven to a dangerously low air pressure then they obviously have lots of money to throw away.
