Got home from a nice dinner with the wife, put on a little TV....mistake....
First we watch some Glenn Beck, which just makes you angry at the whole country and the world.
Then we changed to "World's Most Amazing Videos" of extreme wrestlers trying to kill each other in front of a bunch of yelling fans (fans= mindless rednecks who presumably have the right to vote).
Then I surfed over to "American Beauty"........
Now...as a 40-something American male....I just want to kill myself and get it over with.

I would say if you are judging the world by what you see on TV then you yourself are lost.

It's better to watch the train wreck than to be the train wreck.

You are watching the wrong channels.

Most shows I have seen that are 'hosted' by someone other than Johnny Carson and just plain c--p, so that's your first mistake.

Second, any 'contest' shows are c--p, because all they do is the SOS - set up someone to fail miserably - and in front of 20 million viewers. As someone said earlier - americans seem to love watching train wrecks. Everybody watched O.J. drive around, and everybody watched that plane fly around LAX for 3 hours about a year ago with the stuck nose landing gear.

I can't stand watching the local news, because the first 8-10 stories are ALWAYS about crime or death.

    We did.
Thread is more of a commentary on the garbage on TV, not that I am getting my world view from it (though many others are). Typically I only watch Jim Lehrer, Speed, Top Gear, HBO....that is about 90% of my viewing.
(Though I really think American Beauty is an excellent movie...just a poignant downer.)

To answer your question. We are going the way of the Roman Empire.

    Correct.
"Cycles of Empire" a dense read, but very fascinating. All societies exhibit certain characteristics on their ascendency, plateau, and then subsquent fall. As globalization takes hold, and communication becomes more rapid (the world shrinks) these cycles are shorter and shorter.
The US is exhibiting many of the characteristics one sees during the "fall."
ie: Loosening of social mores and code of conduct, loosening in the language (more slang to name one facet), declining economic control, trade gap, relying upon military might to overcome the economic might, spending more on the military relative to GNP (we spend more on our military than the rest of the world combined). The treatise is massive, and cannot be gloosed over here.

I'm just sad to see it happening.

Hopefully "Borat Obama Bin Laden" will change around our government next year (just a little joke).

Roman Empire lasted over 1200 years ( In the East). We got another 1000 to go. It's only going to get better.

I think that we're generally better off with rednecks watching extreme wrestling than lynching someone of a different color. Going even further, no people (well, unless you're in the Middle East) are accused of witchcraft (and executed) anymore.

We're in a weird place at the moment- we've never had this free exchange of instantaneous communication spanning the globe before and I just think it's going to take a while for us to come to terms with it. It's really easy to be horrified by something you're seeing for the first time.. even though it's been going on for eons.
