Gee, I thought those two words aren't supposed to go together in the same sentence. But you're right with going the Mondial or 3x8 route, maybe the eBay is right for you?

Did you see the Ferrari buying guide thread halfway down the page?

Cheap Ferraris? All relative I guess!

"Ya pays your money now or ya pays your money later!"

Having said that, I would stick with an 8 cylinder pre OBD version. Even though a 400i has simple Bosch FI, there are two of the systems (also two alternators) and more parts in a V12, all of which will increase the costs of any work on the car. If you are planning on saving money by doing the work yourself, you should realize that rebuilding a Ferrari engine will still be expensive for parts and requires more technical skill and experience than a Chevy V8, for example.

Paul Colberg on this site is doing what you are planning with a 78 (?) 308, including rebuilding the engine, and so he could provide you with some sound advice about what is and is not feasible to do.

    Good luck in your search.

Agreed, hunt down a GT4 or Mondial, they've got more of a support network than the 400i and they're all cheap to buy initially. When you buy a car for cheap, you can get a good one or a bad one, so you still gotta be selective!

Having rebuilt a 400i and being in the middle of rebuilding a mondial my advice would be go for a cheap mondial, sooooo much easier to work on and you can actually get parts! whilst the 400's are great cars a mondial is so much easier to run on a shoestring

Well,if you really want to do that......Personally,I would look for something that was well maintained, and is good Mechanically, but needs some Body Work,or Cosmetics. But,to be honest with you....And,as most here will agree.....By the time you get done "Fixing up" a Ferrari, you've probably spent about as much as you would've if you'd have just saved and bought a Decent one. Which, you can find in the mid-high $20's right now....Just so you know.

Check out: www.italianauto.com Mr. Hooper out in Phoenix always has cars that need some body work for reasonable prices. He also has all of the parts that you would need to make repairs.
    Also:
    www.forzamotorsports.com
    www.kimmotor.com
    www.gullwingmotorcars.com
    www.ferraribuy.com
    ebay motors

And,for Interior Parts,Carpet,Upholstery,Etc...check out: www.reoriginals.com and www.worldupholstery.com Check out their websites and you can order their Catalogs.

Also, check out the 'Hemmings Motor News' Monthly Car Magazine. Available at any Newstand. Maybe even your library. But,to be honest with you,it's not very expensive to Subscribe, and it's definitely worth it to get it every Month. LOTS of cars in there. And,LOTS of Parts. Some Ads have Cars being parted out from Private sources, too. They also have ads for Exotic Car Financing Sources. If you have good credit, they will finance just about anything for a longer period of time. But,that may only equal lower payments for a longer time= paying more in the long run.....But....You never know what you'll find....Good Luck!

Spend $3k more and get that blue Mondial 8 euro car that is probably still for sale.

Cheap Ferrari is a bit of a misnomer. My 308 was under $20k, but my budget for getting it sorted right now is $10k.

Unless you really are looking for a hobby car, buy the best you can afford.

Lyle tanner has been in the ferrari buisness for 30 years and always has Fixer ferraris or they break em and part them out.

Go to www.ferraripartsexchange.com and click DAMAGED CARS.
They got a white on white modial covertible clean title that got side swiped on the door and fender. It runs great and can be had for 22k including the 2 new parts. These cars sell for 30k plus and for that kind of money you can own a nice top down ferrari for cheap and enjoy until you can fork the bigger bucks out.

I have bough a 355 spyder and 360 spyder and a 360 coupe through them in the last 12 months

Have you read Collecting Ferrari by Keith Martin? Highly educational for any prospective buyer.

There is no such thing as a cheap Ferrari.

The 308gt4 would be a great place to start for an "entry level" car.

Whatever you do get a PPI.

    good luck in your search.

Your approach is good. Letting the Ferrari group know what you can afford and conveying what you're in the market for is a plus. Because of the exchange rate (Euro-Dollar) imbalance, repair parts that are not US salvage are going to be very costly - and I mean ten times what you would think is reasonable. Additionally, some lower production models that are now 20 plus years old, will give you a challenge in finding parts. The cheapest Ferrari is the most expensive, well-cared for one in the model you have selected. If you can't do that, get a leak down test from a qualified Ferrari technician and plan to do repairs\upgrades as time passes and reasonable parts cross your path.

Having said all that, get a Ferrari. The unique opportunity will introduce you to a whole new world.

I have checked into the sites you guys suggested and have found some things I could be interested in. Thanks very much for the assistance so far, I know all of your help will be priceless when it comes time for me to buy my first f-car. I think I have settled in at buying a 308GTB or similar that is in running order and going from there. I defiantly see it worth my money to spend an extra 8-10K on a running good working shape car than a non-runing full of hidden problems car. I found a black 77 308 that I have already fallen in love with. Mabey i need to start saving extra hard and in the next 2 years, my frist f-car will come home. I get entirly too excited shopping for these things. one day my friends, one day.
