I haven't posted in a while but I finally pulled the trigger and bought a 2004 360 spider (may have to change my logon to Darling360!). The car has had the oil changed at the dealer (which is 150 miles away) and currently has the quaker state 5w-40 synthetic in it. The problem is it is about a quart low and I cannot find the oil locally (apparently not much call for european synthetics around here). Does anyone know of source where I can order it. I have tried searching online but with no success, I can find other brands of the 5w-40 but not quaker state. I usually try not to mix brands without an oil change although it probably does not matter. Any thoughts?

Why in the world your car need a quart of oil after a oil change at the dealer?
For some reason you are burning oil?
I strongly recomend you to put any syntetic oil into the car and drive it to the dealer so they can check it out!!!

Thanks for the suggestions. The local autozone, advance, and walmart do not carry that weight. I will try redline. Actually the oil change was several months and miles before I bought the car so I do not know the exact level when right after. Also I thought that I read somewhere in the forum that some oil consumption is normal.

My car doesn't burn any oil but it is very possible that it wasn't set correctly by whoever did the service. It should be checked: at temp, on level ground, idling. Just set the cap back on top, do not thread it onto the reservoir.

Just a thought, are you measuring the oil level correctly?

You need the to have the oil up to regular operating temperature and then measure with the engine running.

    + Good advise.

I don't understand why is a quart, maybe lees but a full quart is a lot too me.
Remember that we had to change that oil very often. I change mine oil in 6 months or 3,000 miles whatever comes first. I don't think that in that short span of time or use the car can burn a full quart.
The coment that Skid made happened to me but with the F1 oil. I thought that the oil level was low and I put a little more. I fOrgot that when you turn the engine off some small quantity of oil is on the line and maybe in 10 minutes all the oil came back to reservoir.

Just want to make sure that you don't suffer for any major problem inside your engine.
Good luck and hope you enjoy your great car!

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I am used to checking the oil level in a dry sump system. You may notice my user ID is "930" my other toy is an 87 Porsche 930 that also uses a dry sump and checking the level is done in the same manner. Of course I do not know exactly where the oil level started after the oil change over the summer so I do not know if it is using oil or not. Oil consumption can be highly variable on tight tolerance engines such as these but since I this is my first Ferrari I do not have type specific experience. My plan was to get the oil level to a spot I know then watch. The big problem was finding the quaker state oil but I think that any good synthetic of the appropriate weight will work.

It is critical to use the same rating as recommened by the manufacter. It is also important to use synethics is that if that is recommended for your car or use natural oil if stated in your manual. I have walked throught the logic on many posts so I see no need to do it again.

This website is wonderful but I have seen oil recomendations by well meaning people who are not familar with lubrication technology. Use your owners manual and your dealer as your source. This is not meant to rebuke for these particular oil thread posts.

One war story. I looked at and gave an offer on a Enzo depending on review of the service records. The car was using oil not recomended by Ferrari. The dealers service dept. thought there was iron in his oil which means expensive repairs. Yhey suggested I have the oil analyzed. I decided not to buy the car. My point is if you use the manufactured recommendations for oil you have a better chance of selling the car at the fair price.

    Good luck to you.

A quart of oil per between oil changes is not a problem and is probably normal. If you do not have oil smoke while driving or a burst of smoke when you start from a srtop. I would not worry about it, just enjoy.
