    Hi,

I have seen 400i for sale which appears to be in nice condition and would like to get some more information of the specific car.

As I would like to confirm that everything is ok with the car I would need to know first of all where is the VIN number stamped/sticked in the car and does 400i have the same number for engine or is it a separate number?

Also, does anybody have good tips how to get information such as manufacturing year etc. based on the VIN#?

    Thanks.

    Hello!

Welcome...my reply will move this thread back to the top........we use a service CARFAX heree in the US on later model cars with full 17 digit VIN numbers..

There are not a lot of 440i's out there, maybe someone will recognize the one you are looking at.....the VIN plate on my Ferraris is in the driver's door jamb by the lock post..

Search here for Fchatter judge4re, he is our 400i Resident Expert, as he owns one!!!

Use the 'search' prompt (upper left in the blue bar) and enter "400i", for example.....Hope this helps!

Actually the Date of Manufacture is stamped on the same plate as the VIN #!!!!

So if you find that you'll have both info.....

Juha, I think the engine number is stamped between the V on the top of the engine on the 400i (I know it is there on a 365 motor). It will be a different number than the VIN.

Post the last five digits of the VIN and you'd be amazed what comes out of the woodwork.

The Vin is also stamped into the chassis in the engine bay by the passenger side inner wheel arch (just behind the power steering box), if you can post some pics as well as the vin you'll get a few opinions from the half dozen or so 365/400/412 owners (ex owner in my case) on the site

Nice to see some more Finns on this site. That is a really nice looking 400i you've found ! In my opinnion absolutely the best color combo available, and a stick shift ! Is the car in Finland or abroad ? I'm myself also lurking for a 400i (not actively at the moment thou) so if you're importing, I would be very intrested to hear about the process, and its costs.

Anyways, here is a good site about how to decode the VIN http://www.red-headed.com/index2.html , go to 'articles' and then scroll all the way down to 'Decoding the VIN' and click it. Hopefully it helps.

Oh, and welcome to the board !

Nicke, this specific car is for sale in Germany (there is at least 5 different 400 series cars for sale on various German web sites at the moment). However, there is also one for sale currently in Finland, but it's on the expensive side - 50 000 EUR.

Let's see if I will proceed with this or not. I will have a possibility to check the car after Christmas being in Denmark only 3 hours drive from where it's for sale. I think the import process is pretty straight forward, but the problem is how the value of the car is determined by Finnish customs for car tax so I'm bit hesitant at the moment.

Anyway, thanks for the link - it was very useful!

If you get the engine and gear box numbers you can get a heritage certificate from ferrari for free by email. It will tell you if they are the original driveline components, exact birth date and the original colors of the car and interior.

Thanks Newman. I will try to get these numbers to confirm that the car is in original setup. Can you point me to the website where I can order the certificate?

Ferrariclassiche now charges 100 euros for these informations (each) or 200 euros for all three. Largely a waste of time anyway, as a 400 looking like this most likely comes with low miles, original color, interior and mechanical components. If not, does anyone really care as long as the car is in perfect condition and working correctly?

What comes to manufacturing date of #32897, I can tell that #32793 (308 GTSi US/LHD) was (according to door jamb plate) built in 06/80.

I would guess the engine numbers were running somewere around 600-700 at this time (mid 1980), assuming they did NOT reset the numbering system when injection was introduced after some 500 units built.

    Best wishes, Kare

Found more info on engine numbers in my files: it seems that 400i-engines have a numbering system of their own. I have engine number *00265* for s/n 32635, so I'd expect an engine number in range 250-300 for s/n 32793.

    Best wishes, Kare

The heritage certificate is available from the Ferrari Owner's site (www.owners.ferrari.com), but ...
Heritage certificates are only issued for carburated cars, thus not available for a 400i.
