I am thinking about attending the Canadian and/or US GP this year. Since I have never been to either Montreal or Indianapolis before I am not familiar with the cities. My questions are:

    1) Which five star hotels are the closest to the circuit?
    2) Is it wise to have a rental car to go back and forth to the circuit or is it better to rely on public transport (cabs)?
    3) Where are the best seats (sections) to observe the race from?
    4) Any other helpful hints?

Any comments, suggestions, etc. would be most helpful. Thanks!

    Hi Jeffrey,

I have not been to Indy, but have been to Montreal numerous times.

    1) You want to stay around Crescent, Peel and Maisonneuve Street area as this is where all the after-hours action and gathering is. Most of the good hotels are in this area. This area is right in downtown Montreal.

2)You must take public transit to get to the track (subway) or walk (long walk) as it is on a man-made island (Ile Sainte Helene). Even taking the subway getting to your seat can be a long walk (up to a couple mile). Only designated traffic is allowed in/out, unless you have VIP access of course which gets you a water taxi around different ends of the circuit. I would generally use a taxi for any other trips in the city. The prices aren't bad and I have never been gouged. Even public subway is good and all the events and track are within a few subway stops of each other.

3)Depends on what you want: high speed with pit lane view = Gold grandstands on the straight, or cornering action = Senna curve where you can see them braking from the straight and then accelerating out of the curve, or passing = hairpin, but this is a very slow corner. The hairpin and Senna curve are Silver Section. The Bronze sections are also interesting as well because they are chicanes and the cars carry a bit more speed through them than the other corners. All sections have giant screen TV's. I have experienced all the sections and he are actually all pretty good.

    4) We'll talk sometime.

    Hi Jeffrey,

Are you going by yourself or with a group of people? If you are going with a group of people you could look into renting an RV for the USGP. I did this with a couple of friends for the USGP in 2001. We camped out right across from the Speedway. We were able to take cabs or get rides to differnt hotels during the evening. It was a lot of fun. It was so easy to get to and from the track. Best of all when the race was over the guy in charge of our lot got us into the street and it tooks us only about 45 minutes to get on the highway.

At the UsGP I would try to sit in corner one if you can. Then you can see the start of the race and who makes it first to the first turn.

staying in the rv definetly rocks. they are availble locally. stop at krogers and stock up on brews and steaks and you'll never have to leave the lot. there's not much reason to as it is a major party. those nascar bubba's are on to something there. but if you must, the cab to downtown is like 20 including tip each way. so if you plan to gadabout rent an econo job for a couple days. it's cheaper than cabbing it. sit as close to sec H as possible. if you dont have your tickets yet, call the track. the ladies at the ticket office. are unbelievably helpful. staying upscale downtown is pleasant. although you surely will need a car then. parking at the track is like 20-30 a day. still better than a cab. don't forget to attend the fchat annual dinner on at eve. ditto on the canadian info. although i prefer the hairpin exit side. i think it's like sec 25. see you at indy

I can't imagine that you Ferrari guys are too strapped for cash, but if anyone needs to stay in MTL on the cheap, you can get a room in the dorm at McGill U, CHEAP!! Don't expect 5 star accomidations, but on GP weekend even the 3 stars are priced like 5's.
