Goeie dag, my girl and I will be in Amsterdam for a short visit very soon. I am trying to book hotel but no nothing of the area. We would like to be very central, walking distance to the good museums and clubs so if anyone could let me know which district to stay in and if there are any hotels you can recommend, thank you, John

I used to travel to Amsterdam often - we had an office there.

I think the best place to stay is the Kronapolsky (SP - probably not close - too early) It is right on Dam Square in the heart of about everything. Very 1st class hotel, service, space, furnishings, etc.

If you have a larger budget - a great place to stay.

Hmmm..... I am not sure about the Krasnapolsky. The only good thing about it is that it is right on the Dam opposite the Royal Palace.
John, send me a pm and we will find you a great place to stay.
In the meanwhile you can have a look at www.visitamsterdam.nl

I have a 10 day trip to Europe planned in August for my wife's B-Day. If you were me (knowing what you guys know about Europe), Is there enough to do and see in Amsterdam and the immediate surrounding area to stay the entire 10 days? My second line of thinking is flying into AD and staying for a couple of days, then drop down to Italy for a week. Option 3 is to fly straight to Italy and stay there the entire 10 days. I have been to Italy before and loved it. I was thinking of the Lake Como area and venturing to 3-4 other cities in northern Italy during the 10 days. Your opinions on this will hold a lot of weight with me as I know that you guys know these areas much better than I. Thanks in advance, Jerry. P.S. I should add that my wife and I are pretty seasoned partiers and would not be offended at the "goings on" in AD, so that is not a concern.

    Hi Jerry
Personally, I'd say 10 days is too much for Amsterdam. But it is a city well worth the visit. A weekend in Amsterdam and then a week in Italy will give you a nice contrast of northern european and southern european culture, food and people.

Como is a great place, close to Switzerland and Austria, but you're a long way still from places like Sienna, Florence, the Ligurian coast. If you really want to see Italy, I'd consider staying a bit further south than Como to avoid long drive s to get anywhere.

Hope you enjoy the trip, keep us posted.

Simon is right! I know Amsterdam very well and would highly recommend the visit. But 10 days is too long.
10 days in Italy sounds very tempting! :)

Sorry to be a PITA, but if I did fly to AD, stay for a few days, then drop down to Italy, I have a few questions:
    1) Should I rent a car or take the train from AD to Italy?
    2) What city in Italy would you stay in if you were me? Sienna? Florence?
    3) Are there any hotels/motels/hostels in particular that you guys recommend?
Thanks in advance, I promise I won't ask any more questions!! Jerry.

I stayed in the Bulldog Hostel in the Red Light District for 4 nights.... that was an experience. And no, I pay for a hooker... but they are fun to look at.

    Jerry,

You can ask me as many things about Amsterdam as you like. Just send me an email or a pm.
For Italy I would suggest Florence (Firenze) or Rome. Both cities will be a fantastic experience. Sienna is nice, but not very big (although the Tuscan surroundings are beautiful).
If you decide to go to Florence you could consider this hotel just outside the city. www.palagina.it
