I thought it started when the uptight Anita Hill was harassing Judge Clarence Thomas but some1 else opined that it started w motorcycle helmet laws. Maybe it started with zoning laws. Regardless its arrived at a point of insanity now. How do we kill this monster ?

There's no killing this monster. It's here to destroy us. I remember in 2nd grade when Columbus landed and met indians. In third grade(1985) he landed and met native Americans. We used to have a problem with illegal aliens in this country, then it was illegal immigrants, and now it's undocumented workers.

I think it started during the early 60's. First with the civil rights movement, then feminism soon after. The original intent was positive, but it has been twisted now so that even the originators of the movement would be disgusted.

By the way, in order to remain PC you need to change the name of your car to the VirginallyChallengedMobile, but it doesn't haven't the same ring does it?

    Great Thread.

Don't know, don't care, hate it, don't live by it, laugh at it and avoid it.

Is there something recent that has brought your attention to it or just a random question?

How do we kill this monster ?

By calling things like you see them in your everyday life.....no holds barred.....no punches pulled.....and if a PC lefty says something to you.....verbally slap them down on the spot with no mercy. Until these humanoid bipeds of indiscriminate color and gender "come out of the ether" it's not going to get any better.

    Works for me........

    Randall

    Good one......

So common it goes un-noticed. I used the term "guest worker" in a post rather than "illegal alien" and it slipped through like a greasy turd.

Yea....a pile of dog crap is still a pile of dog crap and should be refered to as such. Sick of the lefties sprinkling pixie dust on everything inorder to have it taste like powdered sugar. Once you get past the sweet, its still dog crap. I'd put up appropiate pix but mods would shoot it down. Its pretty gross and cant say as I blame them.

I don't like being hamstrung by the thought police any more than anybody else, but it is an outgrowth of alot of things, not all of which are negative. If you look at the civil rights movement in the United States, it took years, but at a minimum, it changed how alot of people referred to black people in this country, even if it didn't affect their thinking deep down. (Although i think things must be alot better in some real respects too, on that score).
I wonder if anybody has done a serious history of the PC thing?
I would suspect that it emerged out of the individualism/focus on minority rights/everybody is a victim of society mindset that itself grew from minority rights/feminist extremism in the 60's and 70's. I think it was augmented by the recognition that if you ***** loud enough, form an action group, go to congress, and start a lawsuit, you can get heard, now matter how absurd or narrow your issue is.
I also think that one of the trappings of affluence in this country, and its lack of a single defining religion ( a good thing, don't misunderstand) is that we worship our own culture- bill gates is a god, because of all his money, even though he is probably still a geek.Ditto Warren Buffet, and Alan Greenspan. As affluence and culture define who we are, rights and wrongs are defined by whether we take offense. By and large, the people at the forefront of this 'movement' are not the oppressed, the downtrodden and others who have to worry about where the next meal is coming from, or how they will pay the hospitall bill. It's in part vicarious 'worry' by others, as do-gooders on behalf of some 'victim.' It's folks who can afford to feel guilty, and offended. I know the movements against alcohol in the late 19th century, and again, in the early 20th here in the States were part of a paternalistic concern for the poor, who were blinded by drink and poverty caused by drink. Get rid of the booze, and you raise people's standard of living. But, i suspect alot of the women carrying axes back then weren't alcoholics themselves, they were do-gooders. Or, at least that was the rationalization. In other words, smoking a cigarette is no longer just self-immolation, it's second hand smoke that might affect my unborn infant even though i'm not pregnant. What's the real gripe? I'm offended by your conduct. So, don't do it.
That's all i can think of right now. My brain hurts. I need a cigarette and some red meat. Then, i'll probably watch some misogynist movie, go to sleep in a bed made from down extracted by torture from small feathered animals, and wake up offended at something. It's my right.

It all started in the early 60's, maybe '62 or '63. Looking back, it seems like everything had changed by 1970.

I agree, totally out of control. Remember the Corvette ads with the kid cruising around in the car..... some stupid group got Chevy to drop the ad because it taught kids to be reckless behind the wheel. Did you guys see this about Ford supporting Gay sex????? Some people have way to much time.

It was really bad in the late '80s early '90s on the college campuses. Things have calmed down in recent years.

Oh and Uro, you is a sick puppy posting that pic..It's almost as bad as that tubgirl.com on the other thread :D

More's the point is "when will it end?" - no one benefits from it.

I was amused to hear my niece sing a well know nursery rhym - Baa Baa white sheap. WTF? HOW does that offend someone?

I'd say it has always been with "civilized society".

I'm sure there was a conversation between two cavemen thousands of years ago that went something like this:

    "Look Gungar, mammoth ****."

"No Anuk, too small. Only poo."

How about: If you disagree with me, I'd have to worry if my (usually absorbed without thought) opinions are right -- and thinking is a lot of work. If you have a different lifestyle from mine, I have to worry whether I could'a had a V8 (Ferrari) too.

So mommy, make everyone stop being not me, so I don't have to think about the life I lead.

    --
Or how about: Nobody in politics ever calls anything by its right name. Maybe we're supposed to confuse ourselves until we don't notice the politicians' BS.

Orwell's "1984" was supposed to be a cautionary tale, not a "how-to" guide.

Hmm: "1984" was published in 1948. PCism started when? "Newspeak" lives! :(

(A local market, a couple years back, labelled cheese, "New Lower Price". You guessed it -- a buck more.)
(Choco ration increased to 5oz (from 10).)

"It was a cold, gray day in April, and the clocks were striking 13. ..."

    --
Things that are "politically correct" are rarely "correct".

    --

But what really worries me for the future of civilization is:
    - Politicians prefer people not to know too much about the issues.
    - Advertisers prefer people not to know too much about the products.
    - News media prefer people not to recognize all the wrong facts reported.

So just who has a vested interest in promoting an educated, informed public, rather than a fleeceable flock of ignorant sheep?
