I want to take my family (wife and 2 small kiddos) on a vacation this summer to a beach. I have looked at several houses in the Key West area. I would prefer to rent a house for a week. Where else would you fellow F-chatters recommend? We went to San Diego/La Jolla in Feb., so something different from that. Any "secret" places out there that you all recommend?

Destin FL, or anywhere closer to Disney. Destin has nice houses to rent, pretty cheap, easy flight, and not as crowded as CA. Minimal surf, so kids can swim, water far warmer than SD. I lived on the Cove in LJ for years, trust me.

    Cabo is fun.
You can always find an empty beach on Maui.
Carmel is TOO cold (At least the water is and the summer sports a lot of fog).
South Padre Island is suposed to be a great place (Never been there).
Stay at Darth's and drive to the beach!

you looking for in the states or a short flight? Playa Del Carmen is great in Mexico and Paradise Island in the Bahamas is good too. Both just a 2 or 3 hour flight from Dallas for not too much money.

Be forwarned, Key West doesn't have much in the way of beaches, mostly dead coral. To really enjoy the Keys, you have to charter a boat and get out in the water for fishing or diving.

The 2 best beach/summer lifestyle spots in the US are Oahu or Cape Cod. In either spot the whole focus is on the beach and ocean lifestyle. Especially on the cape, everthing you see is vacation oriented.

If you want tons of stuff to do with the beach as an addition, then LA can't be beat.

Most people go to Disney in Orlando for a few days....
...and then Clearwater Beach is 2 hour drive to West Coast.

Clearwater is a good family beach. Soft sand, small waves, pretty and clean, lots of playgrounds for the kids. Also..if you want a quite beach with nothing to do... you can walk up to the North-end of Clearwater beach, or go across the bridge to Sand-key State park. (Also a few miles North is Honeymoon Island, which is a really neat beach State Park).

You can take a day trip to Tampa (1 hour drive) if Disney is too much. Tampa has Bush Gardens (animals and roller coasters) and great Water Slide Park next door.

Also St Pete is fun Day trip .... Bay Walk and Pier.

For summertime, I'd check out Amelia Island. Nice beaches, ocean side, and it's far enough north that you won't get fry-baked. Lots of houses for rent on the north side of the island.

I also agree with Clearwater. My parents spend the winter just a little south of there, in St. Pete's Beach.

    I highly recommend Destin, Fl
    I'm a bit prejudice...grew up there.
Actually, go east of Destin a few miles to Grayton Beach and rent a house in the dunes.

    Check out Belize...Ambergris Caye

Really enjoyed my time there. Reasonably cheap, easy to get to, and plenty to do! Nice beaches, nice people, good food, great snorkeling and scuba, good fishing, and if you need to RELAX....it can be done! Have a rum punch!

Interesting changes in your profile, tmobile.....

    But back to the thread:
Destin is ranked in the top 10 w/in this country.
Sea Island, Georgia. If you haven't heard of it, you probably won't again. Check their website. It's nothing short of decadent.
But why not fly to Monaco....

Bermuda is great. A lot closer than you'd think and it's gorgeous. Plus, the people are friendly and there are plenty of beaches.

My family used to own a condo in Destin and I grew up going down there. It's a great place but, the real secret spot on the Emerald Coast is Grayton Beach. It is bordered on one side by a State park so there are lots of sand dunes, wildlife and the best sand in the U.S.A.
David Letterman built a house down there so, you know it has to be nice and quiet. It is just a neighborhood with 2 or 3 restaurants and a few art shops. There is not a single hotel there, just rental homes and year round residences.
Here is one of the only pictures I have of it on my computer.
