Brake lights went out simultaneously, I am assuming/hoping it is a bad switch, got a new one, but this novice mechanic sure doesn't know where it goes. Any help appreciated.

Follow the brake pedal up under the steering column, 99% of them are fitted there ;) Make sure you adjust it to work correctly when you replace it should it be faulty

Silly question but have you checked for a blown fuse?

Before replacing the switch, check the fuse and fuse block. The Mondial fuse block is notorious for causing electrical problems. Check the switch to make sure it's not just stuck/dirty. And check the bulbs. There is always a chance, though slim, that they both blew. IIRC, that switch is interchangeable with some other cars of the same vintage (not a super-high-tech Ferrari part, it was a stock item they bought). Take it to a NAPA and check the catalogues for foreign parts. You might find a cheap direct replacement.

accutually you only need adjust the nut on the switch in the pedal box. from the bonnet side if you look next to the booster you'll see the pedal box, the back end of the switch and it's electrical leeds should be visable. loosen the jam nut and rotate the shaft until the brake lights work right again.

i just went thru this a few weeks ago on my modi.

the brake lights per DOT should not be fused and should come on with the car off, now if you have a Euro car then they won't work until the key is on

My Mondial was a Euro car. Everything ran through that rat's nest of a fuse block. That was part of the problem with everything electrical on that car.

Thanks for the info (I did manage to check the fuse box); as soon at the temperature here goes above 18 degrees I'll push it out in the driveway to take a look.

The switch is easily accessed by opening the front hood and looking to the lower inside of the brake booster. It has a few wires plugged into it and simply unscrews
