I'm breaking up a 308 GTSi US for parts and I came across something that made me fall off my chair: the speedometer ends at 85 mls and then it's just RED RED RED ... ??? Which dude was thinking to limit the car at 85?

It was a Federal law from late 79 to sometime in 82 I believe. All cars over here had 85 speedometers during that time.

The thinking was if you saw a lower number instead of a higher number, you would be less tempted to drive faster, or something along those lines. Remember we were 55 mph on the highways back then.

Probably just me but I like the original 85 mph speedo on mine. Just one of those things that keeps it original and comes with an interesting story for its reason. Love the vertical orientation of the clock and the GTS badge on the fuse cover while having a GTSi badge on the car. Just a few little details that give my 1980 a little of its own period/year flavor.

I also have a speedometer of 1982 that shows the entire range, so then Reagan must have become president by then :)

My NOV 80 (1981) North American (Canada) car came the same way.

Swapped out the speedo years ago.

    All documented of course.

A lot of them were swapped way back which is one of about a half dozen reasons why you don't trust the mileage shown on these cars these days.

82 was a little weird. I am not certain when Ferrari went back to 180 but I have photos of an 82 I took in Aug of 1983 that shows a 180 in the dash.

I know of one 80 model in particular that was being advertised as "original" miles a couple of years ago with a 180 speedometer and I know 100% it was changed at some point between July 1983 and then from the 85.

Lots of stories out there with lots of cars.
