Hi guys, Does anyone know the location of the sensor that provides the speedometer with its speed signal? I've scoured the shop manual but can't find any mention of it. I would expect it to be in the transaxle somewhere. Am I off base? Bob
Bob- Number 20 here. A hint is to use our sponsor Ricambi's online parts catalog. May take a while to find a part, but you will find it eventually. If you need a sensor part, they are the fastest and most reliable source out there. Taz Terry Phillips Image Unavailable, Please Login
Taz, I just took a look at Ricambi's diagram for a 550 and it shows a plug where your item 20 goes. Is this sensor perhaps for the F1 transmission? Bob
Bob- Never looked at your profile, which would not have helped at any rate (hint). Will look again. My Dino was 02984, how about yours? Taz Terry Phillips
I recently said goodbye to 03814. It was a wonderful car and I love it, but after 23 years I figured it was time for someone else to enjoy it.
Bob- On the 550, I think the speedometer is an output from the Motronic ECU/ABS sensors and that is why the transaxle does not have a sensor. The front toothed ABS sensors have a very good output of actual car speed, less only the inaccuracy of the Ackerman differential when turning and tire wear. This does not affect accuracy very much. Taz, That makes sense and reinforces my suspicion that the speedo signal is different than most. Thanks. Bob
When I was looking at 550s, I was concerned that the extremely low miles on some of the cars was not accurate. I received conflicting opinions on the ease of accessing the speedo wiring. Seems that it is very difficult to access from the dash side and cannot be unplugged at the other end without losing the signal to other systems. I concluded that it was too hard to do and that the extremely low odometer readings were actual. Right or wrong?
David- It is getting extremely difficult to mess with odometer settings any more, short of buying a new unit and installing it. In the case of the 550, it does look like it would be possible to pull the instrument panel and disconnect the wiring harness for the speedometer/odometer separately, but would be a major pain. Not possible at all on a 575M/360 because the odometer mileage (and most instrument panel functions) is contained in a 2Mb chip in the instrument cluster. Taz Terry Phillips
