Image Unavailable, Please Login View attachment 3217016 When I purchased my 85 308 Euro Quattrovalovle Service records indicated it had belt/bearing change three years prior. In anticipation for another service, I purchased belts, Hill tensioner bearings, new cam cover gaskets, distributor housing gaskets / o-rings, outer cam seals, fuel filter, oil filter, air filter and a new high volume water pump that I purchased from F-chat member M5 ? In the Seattle area for $500.Problem is, I purchased these items in 2013 and spent just a little over $1300 US. The service work never was completed for one reason or another. Mechanic kept pushing it off, my work schedule far from home or weather issues just not favorable to transport the vehicle to another trusted mechanic. Received a voicemail yesterday informing me the mechanic who was going to do the service decided he was going to pass on the work as he’s too busy. So now that I’m retired, guess it’s time for my first belt/bearing service. Not overly concerned with the process as I watched my friend do the service on my old GTB. QV. My biggest concern is being able to recognize a current problem if I see it. My question to all of you is, how comfortable would you be still using these parts that are now 9 years old? Thought I would throw away the belts an opt for new but could use some advice on the other items. Really hate to throw them.

Do you know how those items have been stored? Offhand I'd only worry about the belts and the O-ring (although they're probably fine), but that's based on working on 'murican cars.

All items have been stored in the shipping box, no Exposure to sunlight in a heated 60 degree garage the entire time.

I'd use it all except for the rubber bits. And I'd probably use the rubber seals if they still felt and looked fresh. I'd bet the belts are perfectly fine, but I wouldn't bet my motor. So I'd toss those.

Yeah, all the rubber bits (o-rings) look and feel like they are brand new and shipped yesterday. Haven’t opened the package of belts, will just order new ones. Really tough call for me. What’s the consensus on the Hill tensioner bearings? Would think cam cover gaskets would be good to use along with the water pump?

i’ll check back in a bit. Turkish Grand Prix is live at the moment! :)

Bearings are fine - just spin them in your hand to be sure. If they are smooth install them.

Bearing will be fine. I believe the o-rings and seals are as well. Ditto for the air filter and fuel filter. The oil filter is probably ok, but I'd spent the $14 and get another one.

The paper gaskets - hard to say. You have to cut them anyway to install; you should be able to feel if they're somewhat pliable, or brittle. (Don't forget to trim the edges at the endcaps!)

    Belts - I wouldn't use them.

The tubes of goo are fine, assuming they are still properly gooey when you squeeze the tube.

Very much appreciate the input guys! With that said, what sealant do you suggest? I used the Hylomar for cam covers years ago on my GTB but now seems everyone was praising Hondabond for water pump and cam cover gaskets. Really don’t want to use a sealant that I have to spend hours removing next service. Ordered two of each.

You may be right but really hard for me to eat $1300. that’s why I was hoping to get a general consensus on how others would handle this.. Guessing most of you wouldn’t wait nine years to do the service! LOL spent 10 years working for oil company and traveling 650 miles every seven days. Feels very good to be home now.

I used Permatex Ultra Black when I redid my valve covers/cam seals 2-3 yrs ago... so far, no leaks (at least from there.) Have used Hondabond on countless Hondas; it's great stuff. It will last for several years before it starts leaking, but the silver lining is that old Hondabond is relatively easy to remove.
I'd have 100% confidence using it on my 308.

The key with any of them is to prep the surfaces properly (get ALL the old sealant off!), and only put it where it should go (and there aren't many places it should go). And don't use too much.

Haven't done my waterpump, so no advice there.

    Good day Kim,

I am with Brian. Although the rubber bits "look" new they are not... as rubber constantly cures with the curing rate dependent upon the storage environment. Given that the belts are cheap and critical to your engine, it makes excellent sense to replace these.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Just not worth messing with in my opinion. Protect the down side. Belt failure equals complete engine destruction, throw them out. The rest, not engine destruction but if the seals, o rings, gaskets leak think of time and effort to go back in a replace those parts a second time. Not worth it to me, throw it all out.

Only thing I'd replace is the belts... They have a shelf life. The rest will be fine.
Honestly more damage is done when running engines just sit... So once done, drive it regularly.

Good morning guys! Seriously appreciate you’re input. Going to give Ron a call at T Rutlands this morning and order up some new belts and O-rings. Not sure why I have new cam seals as the ones on my 308 seem good. That will probably change after writing this! Only thing I plan to use from the stuff I have on hand is cam cover gaskets, water pump and Hill Tensioner bearings. Hell, might even order up new bearings if they’re still under $120 each. Absolutely hate doing things twice,( like stabbing me in the heart )do it right the first time. Watched a video where the guy changed out the tensioner springs. Is this something I should do? Car has 40,000 miles on it.Thanks again! Will probably have some silly questions later on regarding tensioning. Oh! Will order new oil filter also.

Same... New belts and the rest should be fine. Worse comes to worse, there's a small leak somewhere that can be addressed at the next, while your in there, project.

So I pulled the car into the big shop and was going to start to disassemble in anticipation of the new belts and O-rings showing up in the next three days. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Almost embarrassed to say this but I always thought I had a York AC compressor. Quite surprised to pull the side ducting and find this compressor. At first I thought it was a Saden but could find no listing for the tag accompanying it that reads.. 50-507. Google images show this to be a Sankyo #507 listed for $2240.00. Is this correct? Are there any good? Never heard of them. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

Sanden and Sankyo are related. Same company? From almost any other source a Sankyo compressor is $200. I'm not sure if there's something special about the version for the F40 and GTO, but I'd bet not. Probably the pulley groove is special if anything.

SD507, std R12 flavor. Reverse rotation. Good compressor very common and easy to get if need be and usually for $300 or so.

Don't worry about the springs. And feel comfortable about PM me about tensioning. I have done it every way possible.

Very much appreciate that! You probably should expect a PM haha. You wouldn’t happen to know what the torque spec is for the water pump pulley by chance? If not don’t waste your time, I will dig into it later this afternoon.
