I'm visiting my parents and going through my fathers books and notice this book on Cooper by Mike Lawrence (first published 1999) and this photo jumped out at me.

So which GTO lost it's engine for this Cooper:

After the Cooper Ferrari was burnt in a fire at Silverstone the engine was bought I understand by Dick Crosthwaite.

    Don't think so, based on: 250 GTO s/n 3729GT

But Ferrari have now made a new block so she is back to matching numbers.

Are you being sarcastic or is that truly how things are allowed to happen with vintage ferraris?

the magic, divine hand of Classiche.
the new blocks have a little Classiche symbol to differentiate the new from the original.

I'm actually surprised they have not completely remade cars that have definitely been destroyed in the past. If they did the numbers there is considerable profit to be made ;) :D

Others have already. Perhaps Classiche will at some point. They've already certified at least one that didn't have the original chassis..

This is a site about the people who put together the Cooper-Ferrari, and there is confusion about what engine was used because it didn't have the bhp of a full-on GTO.

Fascinating reading. I'd heard about that cooper ferrari before, but not the whole story. If that motor came out of the bread van, it probably had been upgraded to gto/tr spec at some point anyway. Most of those cars they were competing against in early '67 had minimum 300hp (the repo Brabham which had 350hp by end of the season) and some closer to 400, so if it were in 225-250hp SWB tune, they'd have been way off the pace.

So what were the early Cosworth DFVs? The Repcos were seriously outclassed when they came along. As I recollect the 66 Repco did well because of good power with reliability, 67 was reliability more than best power and 68 was a lost cause.

Early DFV's were 380hp range, but didn't debut until 2nd or 3rd round of '67 so would never have run against that Cooper. IIRC, most powerful motor was the BRM H16 at 410hp followed by the Honda at 400hp and the Ferrari (48 valve) and DFV pushing 390hp by end of '67. The Honda was heavy (but won Monza) and the BRM was heavy and fragile so blew up more often than not.
