Just a quick poll / question as to which wheel(s) will lock up 1st on a non ABS Ferrari. The reason I ask is that after doing some work on my 308 including bleeding/replacing brake fluid I did some test panic stops & every time it was the passenger side front (no passenger) that locked up 1st. Now we're talking standing on the pedal & intentionally locking a wheel(s).
Normal? Or should both fronts or rears lock together?

    Bill,

Before we uprated the 1985 308GTS QV brakes to Brembo, there was some passenger side front lockup first. It may have been attributed to that side needing bearing change. Verell helped with the Brembo front upgrade and noticed the bad bearing and we replaced it. The car now has even front lockup. Naturally you would NEVER want the rears to lock up first.

Maybe, if you have a brake bias adjustment, you may move the bias towards the rear for rain, but stock system should ALWAYS lock up front first. If you have a side problem that is not solved by bleeding then i would check your system and have it corrected.

I would guess that it's the passenger side first because of less weight on that side. Try it with a passenger and see if the results are the same.

It's a lot to do with mechanical grip.....corner weight, tyre grip, shock absorber condition, anti roll bar, spring, camber, caster etc

<Humbly bows> Excellent answer. My apologies, the car here has been corner weighted, etc BEFORE the Brembos and i had passenger lockup first (due to bad bearing is my guess). i assumed his question was IF you have an "IDEAL" and working stock setup...

Stock 308 is light on RF as noted.

Interestingly a friend brought his 246 GTS over on the weekend and we put it on the scales. While we did not disconnect the end links/ARBs, we did make sure the surface was level. LF = RF with 175 lb driver. Cross weights were not bad. Nice huh.

I really have to stomp my 328 to lock 'em up (may need steel brake lines). Mostly both fronts lock almost together, but on most drainage-crowned roads the driver's front is just a hair quicker (pass side is "downhill" side).

I voted "driver's front" because that's usually the one that exhibits lock before the ABS in my foot kicks in. ;) ("Racing gives you bad habits." Sure it does: habits like modulating the brakes, like always wearing your seatbelts, etc.)
