    Michael Scumacher's Ford V-8 powered Benneton (1994)
    or
    Ayrton Senna's Ford V-8 powered McLaren (1993)

The reason why I am asking is that both men won races in their underpowered cars, with Schumey having won the Championship. Winning against the mighty Renault 10 cylinders was quite a feat for either driver.

I think the Benneton was a better all-around package than the McLaren, therefore I think that the McLaren was a more difficult car to win a race in. I remember being more impressed when Senna won a race in that McLaren, since I felt that the car was not capable of winning races. Maybe Schumey just made it look too easy the following year????????????

    Opinions? Thoughts?

Here is what Michael has to say about his '94 Benetton B194:

"It was obvious that this car was a rocket from the first time I drove it. It was just the numerous engine problems that we encountered during testing that caused me concern. The car had only managed to go a full race distance once before the start of the season. After the technical measures introduced on safety grounds in the wake of Ayrton Senna's death, the car was pretty unsteady, but it still won us the championship."

Remember this was the car that some people claimed to have secret (and illegal) traction control built into the engine management software. Part of the accusation came about as a result of Ayrton Senna observing how much better the Benetton was handling in the corners compared with the Williams FW14 early in the '94 season.

Could call James, the Bennetton did have illegal equipment. Do not remember the exact quote, probably Autosport, but they even admitted it but said the driver aids (was it suspension and launch control?) were only used in testing.

I'd say the McLaren and keep in mind the longtime rivals flying away in the obviously superior car: which would have done wonders to anyone else's psyche apart from methodical and great Senna. Knowing your team was rebuidling and watching your questionable teammate do flips over finish lines ( Andretti in Silverstone? ) can not be good for morale. Senna soldiered on.

In 1994 Benneton had factory supported engines, Mclaren had customer engines.
