My 360 has always had a looseness to the off-center steering feel, especially under hard acceleration when the front end goes light, and it’s naturally more noticable at highway speeds. I haven’t driven any other 360’s to know of this is a normal characteristic of the model.
There’s no knocking or untoward sounds associated with it; my ball joints, tie rod ends and sway bar drop links have all been replaced.
Are there other go-to components that I can replace to tighten up the steering feel and eliminate the looseness and play off-center?

    Thanks

    Jeremy

    Like an alignment?

I have a 2003 Modena with over 25k miles. I have never experienced what you described. Good luck with finding the culprit.

I had the hard acceleration problem. My steering rack had a slight weep that I was told was not worth worrying about. Long story short I had my rack rebuilt and that fixed all my problems. The car had roughly 20k miles on it when the work was done.

Do the 360s have the same steering assembly as the 430? On my 430 I had tighten a nut on the steering assembly as the car would get very wayward at around 120mph. I tightened the nut with a 27mm spanner and performed a steering angle sensor relearn (not required on 360) and it was back to being arrow straight at high speed.

The early 360's do not have that nut. I think 99's only.

    A few good theories here.
I wouldn’t think it’s an alignment thing. I’ve had a recent alignment, and the car tracks straight. It just the dead spot on-center that can make staying straight difficult because there’s a degree of movement left and right before it affects direction change.
I don’t have a power steering rack, per se, but I had noticed some moisture around one of the boots at the outer end of one of the boots, but not an actual drip. I’ll keep more of an eye on that, but I’ve never had to top the fluid either.
I’ve seen a video on tightening that nut, and I have done it myself, but I was worried about tightening it too, as I didn’t know if it was a 430-specific issue, and I could end up doing more harm than good, but maybe I’ll give it another twist and see if there’s any more slack I can get rid of, unless someone advises me otherwise in the meantime…

My 2003 definitely has “a” 27mm nut there. I’ve tightened it before. I just don’t know if it has the same purpose and effect as it does in the 430’s.

So I tightened it up some more today and was able to get a few more degrees of movement from it without feeling like I was forcing anything. Went for a test drive and I’m fairly confident it felt tighter, though I didn’t have time to hit the freeway. I think part of the issue is I’m so used to to the electric power steering on my Cayman S daily driver, and I might need to recalibrate my expectations. But having never driven another 360, I can’t really say if it’s just normal and routine.

From memory when I adjusted my car if I went too far the only effect was a restriction of the telescopic adjustment of the column. It's really basic barn-yard engineering!

I adjusted the column for reach and locked the nut solid; I'd rather the steering position was fixed for me but the free play was 100% eliminated. I'd rather be stable over a ton than support another driver's ergonomic needs. YMMV.

    And that’s on a 360?

This is exactly the same as my situation. I had the dead spot too.

Good to know. Where did you send the rack for rebuild?

This was about 8 years ago so I don't remember. I do remember that they gave me the bait and switch and the price ended up being more than a new one and they had if for months on top of that. Luckily it hasn't leaked since it was rebuilt.

Same here. Annoyingly play on steering fixed by properly tightened 27mm nut. Telescoping not needed, this car is only driven by me.

Before you tighten anything in the steering column, you should lift the car up and check for play in the front suspension. "Play" in your steering could be a few things, which are very common on these cars (i.e. worn suspension components)

Indeed; that was my original question. I’ve already replaced the ball joints and the sway bar end links. What other components have the biggest effect on steering “play”?
