Hi Rob--- Congrats on your impending first F-ownership experience. I do appreciate your candor comparison b/w Pors vs. Ferrari. I used to be big on Porsch myself having owned a couple of Turbos until I had my first Ferrari experience and the rest is.... (ok...that fact that Porsch makes most of their 911's look like a Boxter from 100 feet away didn't help but that's another story).

Relative to your embark on a 355, I'd suggest if it doesn't feel right then keep on looking. There are plenty of 355 available in the market today for you to cherry pick without having the agony of making sacrifices or compromises. I am sure you will know "the one" when you come across it. Best wishes to your Ferrari endeavor.

    Tom

    Rob,

I would go with the 95 dealer car. It will be easier to sell on with proper history and will have a warantee. Your driving enjoyment will be the same whichever car you choose anyway, they are the identical in that respect. You will just have a more liquid investment and greater peace of mind. Most of all make sure your decision feels right, if it does not, walk away.

Good Luck with whatever your decision.

I had a chance to see and drive the car at Cavallino. Its in immaculate condition. I was able to review the service history since 2001 and the car is now recieving its 30K service before being delivered to me. A compression check will also be performed just to make sure everything is OK. Martin at Cavallino Motors was holding the car for the owner, Mike Grande of LNS Motorcars. Both are members here.

Besides finding a great car, I was able to meet many of the ferrarichat members while at the show. Thanks for all the advice and the great welcome to F-car ownership!

Before you pull the trigger, you should know that Rossa Barchetta is the worst color for resale on a 355. If you plan on keeping the car for a long time, this does not matter but if you just want to have fun for a year or so, you will take a big hit.

Buy the 95 car. If anything, the fact that it has been always serviced by a dealer is a sign that the car has been probably taken care of.

Hey Scott63, why is rosso barchetta an unpopular colour with the 355, i am interested becourse i have never heard that before. The Rosso Barchetta colour is what drew me to my spider over Yellow and a standard Rosso. So whats the run down dude.

Trigger is already pulled. I love Rossa Barchetta and I have always bought cars for me instead of the next guy. It is also worth noting that Rossa Barchetta was Ferrari's racing color in the early days of the factory. I like the link to its history, just as I enjoy Porsches in Artic Silver.

With regards to resale, if your theory is right I am also buying at a lower price today and I wouldn't see any reason to believe that the depreciation curve will accelerate at a more rapid pace then other colors going forward. In fact, if there truly is a difference today, the gap may actually close in the future. Anyone notice that at Cavallino Ferrari chose to introduce the new model in a color that looked a whole lot like Rosso Barchetta?

Well congrats on the purchase! I hope to see you enjoying it around the DFW area! And of course try checking the Texas section here. There is going to be a Car show for the local F-car people here on March 13 (Sat) at Ferrari of Dallas, you should come show your new toy!

Congratulations Rob! Good to hear you worked something out with Martin and Mike. They definitely seem like good guys to do business with. You're right about that car though.. it *is* immaculate. Keep us posted on how things go and if you have any trouble selling the Porsches ;)

I was eyeing that show at F of Dallas, sounds like it would be a fun 'coming out' party. Only problem is the date conflicts with the Maverick Region PCA swap meet. One of my other cars is an older 911 that I have been converting from a street vehicle into a full time track car and as a result my house is filling up with old parts. I had planned on trying to get rid of a few at the swap meet.

Update on my purchase: The compression test revealed some issues on cylinder #2. When the last compression test was done in 2001 this cylinder was in spec, but on the low side. It is now out of spec. The heads will be pulled and the valve guides will be replaced. It will take an extra week to get the car, but it will arrive with the mechanicals in top condition. Projected ship date is end of next week.

The price I had negotiated included getting the 30K serive done, good compression results, and no surprises from the service being performed. There are probably some short cuts that could have been taken before replacing the valve guides to get the numbers up, but Mike Grande (the seller) wanted the job done right to ensure I don't have problems down the road. He didn't call to discuss the options with me, he just ordered the job to be done right and at no additional cost to me. Besides being choosey with finding the right car, I think its also important that you buy from the right person. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Mike and I couldn't give a higher recommendation. If you are in the market for another toy, check him out at www.lnsmotorcars.com. I probably sound like a commercial now, but he deserves the props.

Robin - the sale of the Boxster S is going slowly. I only have it listed on autotrader, but after 2 weeks I have only received 1 call. There are just too many Boxsters coming off lease right now. At the prices it would take to unload it quickly, I am toying with the idea of keeping it. Only problem is that it would push another car out of the garage. Anyone want a good deal on a 2001 Boxster S with 25K miles? http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=154038062&dealer_id=&car_year=2001&make=POR&distance=25&max_price=&model=BOXSTE&advcd_on=n&end_year=2005&min_price=&certified=n&address=75025&search_type=used&advanced=n&start_year=1984&color=&cardist=0
