As opposed to hijacking the "current" thread....Which Ferari is most "dated" meaning a victim of it's era? Stuff from the 50's is eligable as some of those cars are timeless classics but some are REALLY weird!

I'll kick it off with the Testarossa. It's an 80's style car that is way out of style today; not meant as a knock against it though!!! (by the same token, the 246 WAS dated in the 80's when the wedges were all the rage, but is a timeless classic now)

The side strakes, wide and big body are all form before function that isn't what Ferrari and other makers do today. It's pretty obvious a wind tunnel never touched that prototype! They still turn heads but few would mistake it for a new car.

I disagree with your C4 and Boxer picks as being the "most dated"...and the market does too as both of those models seem to be appreciating at this time...especially the C4!

400i Auto. Compared to the 456 and 612, I just don't like it... like a trapezoid that just forgot it was related to the curvey and sensual lines of the older GTOs and early TRs. Interior wise, I have yet to see a car today that did not look used and abused and very cheaply made. It was slightly before my time and do realize that was the trend and the time, but just not for me when I compare it to family traits.

456 to compare to 355, I think can hold its own. 612 to F430? I can handle that too given the great interior of the 4 seater. Was it a 308 or Dino to 400? If so, ouch.

The TRs actually had a lot of wind tunnel work, as you can see from the vertical air flow deflector right where the door opens and a lot of other small details

The TR was built at a peak of design at Pininfarina, today Pf seems to be in a valley

I am not sure about 'dated', but the Testarossa is such an extreme and recognizable 80s style, probably more time specific than some others which are more subtle.

Yes the TR is definately an extreme design, thats probably a reason I love it since I am a pretty extreme design myself LOL

I think w the TR Pf & Ferrari were very self confident & put out a product they knew would sell and they didnt really care who didnt like it

The C5 Corvette which was totally bland & had workshops were they asked women their opinions about Corvettes seems to be the diametric opposite of TR design

If you can throw out your associations with Miami Vice and the 80's, the TR really isn't dated or cartoon-like.. it's just an awesomely different design.

Dated, IMHO, is the 348 which tried to use TR side-streaks and taillights on a body that was never designed for them. This was validated when the 355 appeared (without those cues) and looked 100% better without actually changing any body panels. Less was more..

The 400i would look a lot better without those crappy black mirrors jutting out from the doors. It's an elegant design that's hindered by the poor details surrounding it.

Market and appreciation does not mean that a design is not dated. The 512M is still strong yet the 512TR and TR are dropping.

the Cuda is strong in the market but Ugly as sin.

Actually -- it's all the stuff the doesn't obey the dictates of the wind tunnel that causes us to remember cars.

Porsche 911 headlights, huge Aston-Martin and RR chromed grilles, Testrarossa side strakes and squared haunches, 308/328 air intakes, the entire rear deck of the Boxer that looks like something evil and industrial out of a Bond film, flying buttresses on too many Ferraris to list here...

Can I register a vote for some degree of form over function? I'll even sacrifice my 200mph drives for a bit of style.

Granted tail fins, quad headlights and some other features haven't aged well. Any time Ferrari indulged in American design influence seems to have resulted in badly dated design, IMO.

Huh ??? I'm going on my 3rd year of ownership and everytime someone in the general public asks what year the car is I counter by asking what year they think it is. I invariably get answers in the late nineties to early 2000's then they can't believe it when I tell them it's 20 years old. So apparently only Ferrari knowledgeable people regard the TR as dated. The heading turning, rubber necking general public does not consider the style dated maybe perhaps because it's still a better looking design than 98% of the cars built today. :)

I think some of the more subtle designs really appreciate over time, examples being the 250 Pf coupe, 330 GTC and others like the Mondial which will as well.

It is interestng that Pf slowly transitioned to more extreme design philosophy on the most part for Ferrari throughout the 70s into the 80s.

The testarossa is the most famous Ferrari in the world.

Although I don't own one, stylewise it will never be dated.
But who am I to judge ? :-(

gotta laugh. every time i go somewhere where there is a lot of mean iron sitting in the parking lot, the first car people go to look at is mine.....it is dated, it is not as fast or quick, but it fascinates people, me included.

it may be dated, but i think of it as iconic

I'm with William, I think PF was ahead of its time in styling with the Testarossa, it really was breathtaking when it came out. Too bad the same guys didn't design the 612 and 599 (Shortly).

Don't get me wrong; I'm in the camp that will sacrifice aerodynamics for style, but the TR is not a modern aerodynamic shape. I'd love to see a cross section of it with the turbulence areas. Some will contribute useful down force I'm sure, but that body isn't exactly slippery. Lots or areas I bet will show useless friction. Again, it's a body built for beauty and I applaud Ferrari for making something distinctive and beautiful. It's the nature of this beauty, however, that dates it to the 80's.
