Don't know if it matters in NY, but in California, 1975 and earlier cars (I.e., the series 1) are smog exempt. Other than that, a little less horsepower in the series 2 cars, but I believe the 0-60 times are a little faster in spite of the lower HP. Some changes in the interior, and the grill. If you can find a copy of The Original Ferrari V8 book, it describes the differences pretty well.
From an aesthetic POV, I personally prefer the nose of the series one with the smaller grille. The series two grille is more "toothy." The interior of the series one is also a little more spartan. But honestly this all comes down to a matter of personal preference.
Series 1 is lighter according to Birdman's info... My series one has aluminum engine/trunk/hood covers and a fiberglass floor. http://www.birdmanferrari.com/pdf/308_GT4_overview.pdf
If you are lucky enough to come across a series 1 branded Dino those are awesome. By the time series 2 came out most were branded Ferrari. Not a big deal but I always liked the dino branding/badges. Mine is a series 1 branded Ferrari and I will never complain, I love these cars.... Does the one you are looking at have a sunroof? If so check for rust around the seals/gutters or discoloration in the roof liner.... Other than that as far as I know the PPI should test the same for series 1 vs series 2. I'll let the smarter people get into the details if I am wrong. good luck
I kinda like the bumpers and grille on the series 2 better than the series one (euro models) I would love to have a track car and a street gt4 , but only in euro.
rubbish, steel doors on all gt/4s usa series two had steel trunk skins series two a/c works better and single distributor buy euro 1/2 better than any usa spec period
euro spec series 2, just awesome i forgot to mention, custom sway bars flat as a pancake in the turns Image Unavailable, Please Login
For sure Series II has better A/c and ventilation. My seat of the pants dyno says that the early Series I cars pull just a bit harder and want to rev just a tiny bit more. Can't say that there's a heck of a lot of performance difference in the examples I've driven. Mine is an early Series I, 10184 Feb 75.
I would like to know this also. The Birdman/Dave Stacy overview says is was around 10776, and I remember reading somewhere they produced no more series 1 cars after mid year in '75-just like the overview says. I have 10562, April '75 series 1 if it helps!
My 208 has chassis number 11662, and is a series one. I don't have the manufacturing date, but the purchase date was May 18, 1976 in Como, Italy.
Good day All, My old Gt4 was chassis 10902 and I seem to remember that the production date on the plate was 1975 (?)... It was a USA GT4 with Dual Distributors, had a 1976 Emissions plate, Ferrari badged, and non-Dino rims... From Rock's comment it would be a series 1 and if so then we have a confirmed chassis number of 10902 from late 1975. Cheers, Sam
In Mathias Urbans book there is a 308GT4 Series 1 with s/n 11462. Must be one of the latest ones. /Pero
