Which is the better investment: 308 or 328?

    We are not yet at the time when the laste boomers and early Gen X have the disposable $$ to really pay for the first FIAT era cars: 308 / 328's...

    the 288 GTO and F-40 excepted the 308's are about the only ones that are really climbing... I lump the BB's in with Dino's as they were designed on the cusp of FIAT / Enzo eras... I highly dobut that in any meaninful economic sense a 308 will be "investment" grade, but you may buy one, and when time comes to sell - not lose money. may even pick up a couple of K...

    This is precisely why I bought my 308 because I can work on it and will be able to work on it going forward. I'm looking for another to restore currently.

    And remember that 3D printing is going to change the whole NLA situation drastically for collector cars in the near future.

    And to answer the original question... Yes, values are starting to rise for 308s. No, I don't believe they are currently a good investment.

    Agree with first then last. Early carb cars and then last gen 328's. The one difference is that the 328 seems the favorite in the US but the early 308 in UK/Europe.

    Friendly advise from an old guy that still has his first car-bought in 1970 (1952 MG TD). Don't but either one as a way to make money. Buy it because you enjoy it and ENJOY IT. Also don't listen to those who prescribe to you how you have to enjoy your car. If you want it original-great, if you want to modify it-also great.
    About 1975 I bought an old 1959 Ferrari that was hard to sell because it was perceived as too expensive to fix (it had a blown motor), I bought it and it was the first motor I ever rebuilt. When it was running I used it in any SCCA event that I could. After owning it for over 30 years it ended up being a good investment-but that was not the point, I had some great times in that car and when I bought it I had no idea it was a 250 GT Series 1 Cabriolet. It was just MY car-enjoyed to the fullest!

    I don’t pretend to know whether a GTB is a better investment than a GTS, but to suggest that most GTS owners settled for their cars due to a lack of GTBs being available is just wrong. There is a very good reason why GTS cars originally outsold GTBs by a considerable margin. The reasons for that are just as valid today.

    I disagree with the notion that the 328 will automatically be seen as the last version. They are significantly different, and one could reasonably argue both sides. Maybe the 328 will be seen as the 308 perfected, or maybe the 308 QV will be seen as the last true 308. Other collector cars (911, E-Type, etc.) had similar evolution in their history, and the market response isn't consistent.

    I am putting my money on a 308 QV that I'll welcome home next weekend. I personally love the 308 and don't find the 328 particularly appealing. That's just one man's opinion of course, so I'll be waiting to see what the market thinks. In the meantime I plan on enjoying a classic car.

    Here in the UK, values on 308 QV are rising fastest followed by late 328. Both of these have proved to be very good investments over the past few years, if thats what matters.

    I know the owner of a nice QV who has his on the market with a dealer at 79,000 GBP (130,000 USD).

    The 308 caught my interest because it arrived when I was in high school. Where I lived in the mountains we could not get any CBS programs at all. So, I never saw Magnum PI until ten years later or so on cable after I landed in civilization :):).

    I hate to break it to you but the unwashed masses cannot tell the difference between the 308 and the 328. So, yes, you have the "Magnum, p.i." car.

    Don't forget the 328 was used in a Magnum PI episode as well (as we learned last year right here on Ferrarichat) so technically they are all Magnum PI cars whether you like it or not. I have actually had less Magnum comments than I was expecting from the public. Although, I still have yet to get gas without one person coming up and striking up a conversation.

    If you really want one and the small differences aren't important too you buy the best maintained one- either model- you can afford. Deferred maintenance can be very expensive! Also remember that the last of the 308's were made from galvanized steel, unlike the earlier ones...also the QV cars (late 308's & all 328's) had better valves, and so on & on. The 16" rims also have far more tire selection available, at far less cost too.

    Really? I was under the impression that we learned it was NEVER used. Perhaps I misunderstood.

    You are right about the fact that no one other than folks specifically interested in these cars knows or cares about the difference in a 08/28 . When folks see my 328 and say "Thats the car Magnum drove,, right?" I just say, "Yep!"

    I think the last "investment" --- if that means, what it is supposed to as in increase in value with increase in time --- (non-limited production / non-Super) Ferrari will be / is the Boxer. Nothing made after that will be anything more than a "used Ferrari". Since about 1979, Ferrari has been slowly, but surely, destroying its own cache by producing too many new models with too high replacement frequency, and by making too many units of each model.

    it is true, I have never had a lay person in 14 years of 328 ownership that didn't think it was exactly the Magnum PI car.
