Two closely speced and priced cars. Thinking for speculative investment reasons (10+years). Would drive car minimally.

Would you rather have for this purpose a very clean car with better service records that needs nothing with almost 10k miles.

Or a less clean car in need of cosmetic work (dash leather, wheel scrapes, CF needs refurbishment, and incomplete service records) with 3.5k miles.

I guess the question is would the lower mileage in this case offset condition and records.

Records may be able to be found, minor cosmetic issues can be addressed. You can't roll back an odometer (Ferris Bueller proved that).

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks -ray

If it is for investment I would go for the second one, and fix those cosmetic issues.

I think the difference in mileage is quite small given 10+ years from now so I'd personally rather go with the 10k mile car depending on how much it costs to fix the second one.

The delta between perception of a 9,xxx mi and 3.5k mi car as far as value is concerned is minimal, IMO. I would consider them similar with the major differentiating factor being condition and originality. From that perspective, the former car would be the better buy as it needs less work and is ostensibly more original. Now, if were talking a deliver-mileage or sub-1k car, that would change things.

How many mikes will you put on the car over 10 years time.

If more than 15k miles total, I'd go with the cleaner higher miles car.

I typically put 2k miles per year on my sports cars.

I would drive maybe in 200-300 mile range/year. Enough to keep her moving and hopefully not become stagnant.

Good points. I suspect In 10 years will be 11.5k vs 5.5k miles. Also, the lack of service records concerns me. I could see how this one could become a "storied" car.

    Depends on the car/year.

Yeah, what car are we talking about? Depending on the car, either example might work out fine.

I assert a car with good records and higher miles trumps a car with little records, needing of work, with lower miles.

However, the idea that these cars are investments is WAY off because in general, they aren't.

I suggest buying what YOU like because you might be stuck with it for a while.

Good advice overall, and I agree generally bad idea and speculative to invest in these things. Don't know if I'm delusional and "rational-lies-ing" my passion for cars as an investment. I'm just in the early phase.
