When the Laferrari came out, and then James May revealed that the car was called 'the Ferrari, the Ferrari', I can remember all of the threads, and Carbuzz posts slating Ferrari for their name choice. However, no with the release of the 812 Superfast at our doors, do you think the 812 or the laf has the worst name? 812 Superfast, or the Ferrari the Ferrari?

You do realise that SuperFast is actually a Ferrari historical name from the 60's? To me, that automatically gives it credibility. If, one is unaware of Ferrari's history, then I can see many thinking it a dumb name.

Ps this is not supposed to sound rude!

812S is a proper Ferrari name, LaFerrari we're now used to it but it's still essentially a stupid name, a bad joke.

I'm with you. Maybe this name "SuperFast" will get some of those "newbies" to look at a past history which is part of what binds us to this great marque?

I'm now going to attempt the impossible and defend the name La Ferrari to the English speaking world.
If you understand how Latin languages work, it makes sense, I think.

"La Ferrari"refers to the institution that is Ferrari, not just the racing team, Scuderia Ferrari, but to the whole thing, the producers of road cars , the staff, the factory, all of it.
Its a celebratory name, a dedication to the Old Man and the realisation of his vision.
THE Ferrari, the reason we are all here.

    That's my take anyway 😀

You're completely right about the LaFerrari name, that is what LdM himself explained back when he presented the car. "La Ferrari" as the company, the institution. Still, a stupid name for a car. A superlative name that will be rendered nonsense when the next F-hypercar comes.

I think that's a good defense of LaFerrari.

I actually think this is a historical misapplication of the Superfast name as on past cars it was applied to ultra powerful, and ultra exclusive cars for the most V of VIP and royalty. The 812 is ultra powerful, but that it is a non limited, production Ferrari, you might say its exclusive, but not ultra exclusive like a LE car such as the TDF. That being said- I like the sound of the name and if it does get people to look back at past models to learn more about the history then, that's something I would support.

My opinion- both are fascinating names. It might be interesting to do a poll on favorite Ferrari name and maybe reason why.

Naming for the first time a car LaFerrari "The Ferrari" is a risk and implies that Maranello considers this car an absolute master piece and the creme de la creme making us suppose that all Ferraris from the past and future which have other names, will never achieve it's status and implicit superiority. Hybrid with a total of 936 hp and a maximum speed of over 370 Kph the LaFerrari closest competitor right now the 812 Superfast is lying very far behind with less 136 hp. The problem for Ferrari will be the day that a new model will be launched that will surpass the power and the maximum speed of the LaFerrari. Than may be they'll have to name it the SuperLaFerrari…...

What does the 8 in 812 stand for?

Superfast might be a historic name, but I still think its kinda stupid. Should be left in history.

GTC4Lusso is also kind of weird, mashup between two names. Well, that does not stop me from wanting them! Just not a fan of new Ferrari names

    LaFerrari Superduperreallyfast LOL

It's funny though, that with time and familiarity, opinions change. I personally thought "FF" was a dumb and largely uncreative name but now ... It just seems fitting. That car is the FF ... Perfect. La Ferrari is "the" Ferrari and even though some day there will be a Ferrari which will surpass it, does that make the eponymous Enzo any less special? To the general public,"super fast" is just silly ... But to those who get it, who are also the folks that actually buy these cars, it has a different meaning and is no different than a Mustang GT350 in that sense ... It harkens back to a different era. I love that. Not many companies have the history to do that ... The fact that the new Alfa is the Giulia just makes the car that much better, as it's more than just a name.

    8= 800cv (approx 788 hp)

I'm sure when the next supercar comes, they will say "LaFerrari" was the pinnacle, and now its surpassed by the new one.

4 is the unlucky number sounding similar to 'death'. So with 8 being lucky what would they think of a 488?

Also I don't care what they call it.

963 CV for the LaFerrari, not 936.
Surely, they 'll come up with a suitable name for its successor.
