Guys.. Some real passion out there for driving your cars... Another question relating to gears, do any of you have the hill quick shift selector gate fitted to your cars? Cheers Rod
"Drive" is a verb, not a gear. I like the sound of the little blip as you clutch down to 2nd for a turn. It's like the car saying, "Stand aside everyone, I take large steps". ("I, Miles Gloriosus ...") I was waiting to see if anyone said "Mad Max (tm) nazi bondage gear ..."
Interesting question. Rowing through the gears when everything is warmed up has been very satisfying. It shifts much smoother than I would have thought based on what I've read. The classic click when you shift is also one to experience...if you haven't heard it...you've gotta hear it. As far as my favorate gear...it depends... Neutral... Technically, not a gear...but definitely needed to start the car...or depressing the clutch... Reverse, in my case, is most important as it allows me to start the journey. Essentially, I need it to back out of my garage... Push it down and engage! Click... First is really good. It really does help the car get off the line and moving forward. Click... Second...it's actually buttery smooth after it's warmed up, otherwise I just skip to third. Click... Third...I think I actually use it more than second. Normal city driving is mostly in third...engine has enough grunt to pull at low rpm, but third is geared high enough to enjoy some rev'ing too. Click... Fourth...a little better gas mileage than third...maybe... Click... Fifth...yep...I use that gear too. Click... Sixth...where's is it? No more gates...but I don't see a need in this car... No click... As such for me...I do enjoy all the gears, but it's a toss up between Reverse (to start the journey) or Third...hmmm...right at this moment...it's Third gear that does it for me. As far as Hill's slick shift...I did install it on my car, but didn't notice a difference. However, I've been taking my time shifting and do it quite deliberately, so the benefits of slightly angled/ground gated fingers are unnoticed by me... I'm sure it works wonders if you're speed shifting or rowing with vigor. I purchased it from Ricambi America. They were awesome. Well...I've rambled enough...I should go put it in gear now... Enjoy your respective rides in good health. WSP.
I've found that most things on these cars are there for a reason. I'd expect the shift gate is no exception. I don't find that the stock gate slows me down at all. (But then, I've owned this car a few years, and it's been my summer daily driver for several of them.) I'd say Wayne's on the right path. Take your time and get it right, and speed will take care of itself, with practice.
I'm new and not versed in the Ferrari add-on thing but in looking at that hill "quick shifter" it appears in the pics to be nothing you couldn't do in 10 minutes with a file followed up with a bit of 600 paper. Can't see how it would do much - it's not like a real shifter mod like a Hurst shifter (had one on my 911) that really does shorten/improve the shift dramatically. I can understand why lots of folks would not want to file the oem Ferrari shift plate though it wouldn't bother me. But I just can't see how it could make any noticeable difference in the shifting.
